In ancient Greece, having a mole on the lower lip was considered a beauty mark.

In ancient Rome, a mole on the lower chin was considered auspicious. Reason: Emperor Augustus had one.

In reality, a mole is nothing but an overexpression of hyermyelinization in the superficial dermal tissue. A result of over expression of melanocytes via m-RNA transcripts in the translational-transcriptional pathway.

a mole is a result of optimum expressivity of molecular transcripts that encode for melanocytes--which then lead in the development of hyperpigmentation within a specific tissue locale; IE, on the epidermal lining aka the skin.

Hence the mole manifests.

If excessive growth continues unchecked, the mole will grow, if growth is unimpeded due to a deficiency in TSG (tumoric suppressive genes), then the mole will become benign, and if the tumor manifests and metastasizes by circulationg into the lyphatics, it becomes cancer.

My point, when one believes in superstitious notions, it becomes the common ideology or a popular one, at that. Substantiated? Sure, in a personal perspective.

Science explains the reasons for moles. It is up to the minds of men (their culture, language, and societal epoch) to dictate the meaning of said physical manifestations as being popular, beautific or the antithesis.
