'Where are you from?"
This is all too common question asked by another Asian (mostly women) “Where are you from?" before "hello, I am ____."
I was at a basketball game this past weekend and I saw another Asian woman who looks friendly. I love friendly people. She had a friendly smile as she passes by holding her 2 years old son and I smile back at her. Soon at halftime, she came over towards me and said, "where are you from?â€
Exactly, no introduction, no hello, no "what' is your name?", but "where are you from?†I hear this too often, in fact I expected this from another Asian to ask first "where are you from?" rather than a friendly hello, or hi, my name is? Alternatively, what is your name?
I have been asking about this for a long time, what is so significant about this? Why not know me first and ask me that question later. It is visually clear that I am from an Asian country; does it really matter where I am from?
Then, I am confuse by how to answer this question because I was born in Anda, grew up in the U.S., and live all over the place, which one do they really want to know?
I am from Anda, Bohol, Philippines.
