Shanghai man's lower leg amputated after getting trapped in escalator

By Tiffany Ap and Steven Jiang, CNN
Mon, August 3, 2015

HONG KONG (CNN) — A Shanghai man has had his lower leg amputated after becoming trapped in a mall escalator, the third serious escalator-related accident in China in a week.

The 35-year-old man, surnamed Zhang, was a cleaner at the Cloud Nine shopping mall in Shanghai's Zhongshan Park, state media said.

Video surveillance footage shows him cleaning with a mop on Sunday evening before one of the escalator's metal floor panels give way, trapping his left lower leg.

GUANGXI- A one-year-old's left arm was caught in the stairs of an escalator in a shopping mall in China's Guangxi region, just a day after a woman plunged to her death after riding an escalator in a mall in Hubei.

Rescuers managed to pull the child's arm out half an hour later, People's Daily reported. His hand was mangled in the incident.

Some reports said the boy had ventured to the escalator in the shopping mall in Wuzhou city when his parents were resting. He tripped when he was trying to get onto the escalator.

NEWS 1:

Chinese mother saves son seconds before falling to death inside escalator

By Steven Jiang, CNN
Tue, July 28, 2015

Beijing (CNN) — Security camera footage has emerged of a mother saving her young son's life seconds before losing her own on an escalator in China.

The 30-second video begins innocently enough: As the escalator in a shopping mall almost reaches the top, a woman in a white shirt and black skirt lifts up her young son to get ready to step off.

But as she does, a metal panel suddenly collapses under her feet and she falls into the gap.

Struggling with only her upper body above the structure, the mother is seen pushing her son forward. The boy is quickly pulled to safety by a mall employee standing near the top of the escalator.

Two other mall employees try to drag the trapped woman out -- but within a few seconds she disappears through the hole, into the escalator shaft.

Despite a four-hour rescue operation at the upscale AZG Mall in central China, firefighters declared the woman dead when they finally cut the escalator open and found her body Sunday afternoon (July 27 PHT), state media reported.

After Three Grim Accidents in a Week, Is It Even Safe to Ride on a Chinese Escalator?

Rishi Iyengar

A woman walks next to escalators at a department store in Shanghai

Experts warn of poorly maintained, aging equipment and not enough inspectors

Exactly a week earlier, video of 30-year-old mother Xian Liujuan went around the world after the escalator she was traveling on, in a department store in the central province of Hubei, suddenly gave way. She was able to push her young son before being sucked into the machinery and killed. On Friday, a toddler’s arm got caught in an escalator, this time at a mall in the southern Guangxi region, when he tripped after wandering away from his parents. His mangled arm was pulled out 30 minutes later.

These three accidents have led to heightened concerns and scrutiny of the country’s aging escalators and elevators, many of which are not up to acceptable safety standards. A report by the country’s Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), cited by the state Xinhua news agency, found that more than 110,000 escalators have potential safety issues of which over 26,000 have not yet been repaired.

The AQSIQ said there were 49 escalator accidents in 2014 that claimed 37 lives, the Global Times said, citing Xinhua. The accidents were generally caused by poor design, the use of substandard materials, installation and maintenance, China Elevator Association official Zhang Lexiang told the Global Times.

According to the website china.org.cn — a government portal run by the State Council Information Office — figures from the China Elevator Association show that more than half of all accidents involving elevators and escalators are connected to maintenance and repair neglect.

Zhang Huaiji, an engineer with the Shenzhen Institute of Special Equipment Inspection and Testing, told the site that there were not enough inspectors for China’s many escalators and elevators, and added that low wages and long hours were leading many maintenance workers to leave the field.

The central government has ordered all its provincial authorities to ensure that escalators in every mall are functioning properly by Aug. 10. Chinese citizens are meanwhile taking no chances. Images and videos of their ways of dealing with escalator-phobia, being shared on Chinese social media (and excerpted here by BuzzFeed), range from practical to hilarious to risky.

This Is How People In China Are Riding Escalators After A Horrific Accident

People who have to ride escalators are rightly freaking out in the wake of the recent fatality.

A short video of a mother’s fatal fall into a hole atop an escalator — moments after she saved her son — has been pulling at viewers’ heartstrings since it was released last Sunday.

A short video of a mother's fatal fall into a hole atop an escalator — moments after she saved her son — has been pulling at viewers' heartstrings since it was released last Sunday.

But as horrifying as it was, the tragedy captured on security cameras was only the first of three high-profile incidents that happened on Chinese escalators and elevators over the last week.

Just Tuesday, another teenager burst into an empty hotel elevator shaft, fell, and died, according to news portal Sina News.

Businesses’ overall lack of any sort of safety mentality, appropriate training for staffers, and failure to comply with regulations are making people distrustful of public security.

People figured out that they had to be more self-reliant to guarantee their safety. These are some of the results of a national brainstorming strategy, fitting the Chinese pattern of reacting to tragedies with laughter instead of tears:

5. And some users, like “Pear Puree” here, are resigned to the chance of death. “Such an era of ‘coming into the world by planning and die at random’!” they wrote, referring to China’s family planning policies.

9. Because even the handrails are dangerous. One Weibo user says, “Actually, the handrails run into problems sometimes too… There’s one in a shopping mall near my place that moves backwards every dozen seconds; kids with weak balance will fall down.”

So remember: Always treat the escalator with the respect that it deserves.
