The Department of Finance (DoF) will endeavor to focus on more efficient tax collection measures on professionals in an effort to curb graft and corruption in the private sector. In a recent meeting with Cebu business leaders during his last visit here, Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said Government is bent on intensifying its campaign in collecting appropriate taxes from professionals like lawyers and doctors, noting that there are some "unscrupulous" professionals who are not paying the correct taxes. "These professionals, like doctors and lawyers need to shape up in terms of paying the right taxes. Unfortunately, there are some who underpay their taxes. If you see the amount (they pay), you can have an immediate heart attack," Purisima said. Apart from lifestyle checks on professionals that will be implemented by an inter-agency program of the Government, Purisima emphasized the huge collectibles of taxes that can be extracted from lawyers and doctors.
"We call on those from the private sector to help Government also in identifying those professionals who are not paying their taxes correctly," Purisima stressed. Citing official data, he said the Government is only able to collect some 13 percent of total tax collectibles due it. Apparently, he said there is a "huge leakage of tax collection." According to him, paying taxes religiously will be very beneficial for the country's economy because this will enable Government to fund more infrastructure projects. With the current administration's thrust in curtailing graft and corruption, Purisima likewise assured the local business community that "the Government will take care of the money collected." - Manila Bulletin
