Schoep, The Dog Whose Internet Photo Touched Millions, Dies

In August of 2012, this photograph of John Unger and his dog Schoep sharing a moment in the waters of Lake Superior captured the hearts of millions. Unger would take Schoep into the lake every evening to ease the pain of his severe arthritis. Thousands soon donated to Schoep’s treatment which allowed Unger to have a little more time with a dog that changed his life. Schoep turned 20 on June 15th, he died 26 days later.

i understand gyod, loll.  di gyod lalim ning helpless pets nga mo-go, bisag kahibawo ta nga mo-go one day.  this is one of the most touching stories of man and pet i've ever come across.  i hope john finds real happiness soon.  he's too great a man not to deserve his own place of heaven on earth.

our vet here in manila had told us that an 80-year-old woman had given up her cat and gave some donations to the vet clinic.  she said she wants to see to it that her cat is truly cared for, because she could go anytime at her age.

on the home front, my sister is going to have her chemo sessions in less than a week.  guess what the requirements are... absolutely no pets in the house or in the immediate surroundings.  our houses are attached, like a duplex.  we even have a common garage.  imagine the proximity of 31 cats and 4 dogs (2 are hers).  we have been advised to let go.  that left me sleepless for weeks.  maybe the dogs may have takers, but the cats would take an eternity.

i've been crying day in, day out, not only for my sister but at the prospect that we may have to put our pets down, the way some families did when a member went through chemo.  we take them all to a shelter or veterinarian and have them put to sleep forever.

Say this prayer before you go to sleep tonight, and place your worries to Jesus Christ. Let him lessen the burden in your heart and soul, dear Tita.

Lord Jesus, may everything I do begin with You,
continue with Your help,
and be done under Your guidance.
May my sharing in the Mass free me from my sins,
and make me worthy of Your healing.
May I grow in Your Love and Your service,
and become a pleasing offering to You;
and with You to Your Father.
May the mystery I celebrate help me
to reach eternal life with you.

Amen.

god is kind.  in him nothing is impossible.  we thought of a better solution---it's easier to relocate one person than 35 animals.  we thought of possible convents for my sister.  then a neighbor who is abroad offered her vacant house, for free.  wow!  my sister would be near enough for her food to be taken care of yet far enough from pets.  we all sighed in relief.

thanks for the prayer, lorenz.  you must know that every evening i search this forum for specific prayers you've posted.  every time something tugs at me, i open this forum and search for your prayers that i feel are appropriate for my hour of need.  and those needs are myriad!

i see to it that i read hofelina's posts on saints and meditations too.  thanks to both of you.  we may have been strangers living now in different continents.  thanks to tb, we are one after all.

Schoep and John
Good Morning -

Unusual feeling, this is. I'm unable to catch all of the words bouncing around in my head, but I can tell you this - I'm alright, sad yes but in good spirits. Another thing I can say without hesitation - Every single one of you has made this transition so much easier to handle, for you are the greatest support an individual could hope for.

THANK YOU TO ALL

It has been a roller coaster of emotion, every day a bit better.
May PEACE be in your soul, as in mine,
we'll see you in the next day or so - John

Thanks for inspiring us John, my heart is still broken... Schoep will always be in our hearts :-*

John Lundy of the Duluth News Tribune interviewed John Unger, who described how Schoep saved his life.  After breaking up with his former fiancee, Unger had been having suicidal thoughts. “To be honest with you, I don’t think I’d be here if I didn’t have Schoep with me (that night),” Unger told Lundy. “He just snapped me out of it. I don’t know how to explain it. He just snapped me out of it. … I just want to do whatever I can for this dog because he basically saved my ass.” Minnesota Public Radio reports that the popularity of the photo has spurred an outpouring of support in the form of donations to help pay for laser treatment for Schoep’s arthritis.

Photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson,  a friend of Unger’s, decided to capture the relationship between the man and his dog down by the water.

“This photo was from a last minute session,” the Bayfield, Wis., photographer told The Huffington Post in an email. “We had been trying to get together for weeks, but it kept not happening because of my travel schedule for Stonehouse.  We finally got together last Tuesday (the 31st). I had about 5 minutes to shoot and this is what I caught — a man and his dog. John loving his Schoep, and Schoep trusting John so much he falls asleep in the buoyancy of the water. This is in no way posed. I hate posed photos. They never, ever capture the true essence of anything.”

“Shep falls asleep every night when he is carried into the lake. The buoyancy of the water soothes his arthritic bones. Lake Superior is very warm right now, so the temp of the water is perfect. I was so happy I got to capture this moment for John. By the way, John rescued Shep as an 8 month old puppy, and he’s been by his side through many adventures,” she continued.
Stonehouse Hudson never imagined the tender moment she captured would eventually go viral and touch the hearts of hundreds of thousands.

“John lives for this dog, and for the dog’s comfort,” she told HuffPost. “My mother has a saying, ‘Everything is for the comfort and convenience of the Dog.’  John is a prime example of this.”

Stonehouse Hudson regularly photographs dogs as part of her profession. She offers pet sessions and often takes pictures of dogs at weddings. To give back, she does free shoots of hard-to-place animals for local shelters.

She said the photograph of Unger and Schoep is more than just a moment frozen in time; it’s an everlasting reminder.

“I want people to identify with this photo, and remember a time when they felt safe, loved, and cared for,” Stonehouse Hudson said. “Then I want them to channel those feelings and pay it forward! There is way too much negativity in this world – maybe with this one photo we can start to change things just a tiny bit.”
