Protecting girls against child marriage

by PNA

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon Wednesday called for protecting girls against child marriage on the inaugural day of the International Day of the Girl Child.

"Globally, around one in three young women aged 20 to 24 -- approximately 70 million -- were married before the age of 18," Ban said in a message.

"Despite a decline in the overall proportion of child brides in the last 30 years, the challenge persists, particularly in rural areas and among the poorest," he said. "If present trends continue, the number of girls who will marry by their 18th birthday will climb towards 150 million in the next decade."

On Dec. 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare Oct. 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls' rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.

This year marks the first anniversary of the day with the theme of "my life, my right, end child marriage."

Ban noted that child marriage divorces girls from opportunity. It also jeopardizes health, increases exposure to violence and abuse, and results in early and unwanted pregnancies.

The secretary-general pointed out that education for girls is one of the best strategies for protecting them against child marriage.

With the access to school, girls can build a foundation for a better life for themselves and their families, he said.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

When I attended the Anti-Graft and Corruption Prevention Seminar last August, there was a part that VAWC was tackled. Now in an open forum, one school head raised a question, how to convince this tribe leader who arranged the marriage of a grade 4 female pupil to a 20 year old man? Accdg to the school head, the girl don't want to marry that man so he decided to talk to the tribe leader. The tribe leader replied, tradisyon na ni sa among tribo sa unang panahon ka, wala kay katungod nga manghilabot ani. Kung manghilabot ka, pwede ka namong patyon. Walay nahimo ang school head.

HOW ARE THEY GOING TO SOLVE THIS KIND OF CASE? moadto ba sila personally atong nga tribe leader para i convince nga naa'y balaud bahin ana?
