Prince Harry rides the dragon
« on: December 12, 2008, 03:03:05 PM »
PRINCE Harry dreams of “riding the dragon” in the Army’s devastating helicopter gunship.
He aims to take to the skies in our toughest war machine so that he can make a dramatic return to action on the front line.

The Prince is in the process of trying to qualify for training as a pilot of an Apache attack helicopter.

Chopper facts ... Harry's dream

He has accepted that his high-profile presence on the ground makes him a bomb magnet. But by switching to the air he would be free to serve his country without any added risk of attack to his comrades.

Harry has been desperate to find a way to fight since facing up to the frustration of being forced to pull out of Afghanistan early in March.

Last night Clarence House confirmed the 24-year-old officer has already passed the first stages of the tough Army Air Corps selection process.

Next month he will begin a four-week “grading” at the regiment’s base in Middle Wallop, Hampshire.

If he passes that stage, Lieutenant Wales — as Harry is known — will spend two-and-a-half years learning to fly in combat zones.

Once fully qualified, he would be free for deployment all over the world — playing a pivotal role in the Army’s vital air support division.
