If you have received a similar text message in the past, you have something in common with millions of other mobile phone subscribers in the country. In fact,
even President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo herself has received similar messages several times in the past.
Which is why the Department of Trade and Industry, the National Bureau of Investigation, and the Western Union Co. have banded together to launch the Security Awareness and Fraud Education (SAFE) program -- a consumer education campaign that aims to prevent Filipinos from falling prey to scammers.
“Any Filipino can fall victim to fraud -- regardless of their education level, economic status or social background. Perpetrators of fraud are constantly coming up with ways to entice people into new scams,’’ Trade Secretary Peter Favila said.
“If we can educate people about the types of fraud, they will be better prepared to protect themselves. That’s a goal we hope to achieve with the SAFE program,’’ he added.
