She's the star of a new opera based on Monroe's life opening in the northern German city of Rostock this weekend. In this famous scene, she sings 'Happy Birthday, Mr. President' to John F. Kennedy.

Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Charley De Jesus surveys an ice-covered warehouse that caught fire on the city's South Side Tuesday night. Officials said it was the largest fire the department had battled in years, with a third of all firefighters in the city working to control the blaze. The city faced freezing temperatures again on Thursday.

Gao Yinyu likes to keep fit. The 77-year-old retired teacher does a headstand in his underwear at a snow-covered bathing spot in Jilin, in northeastern China. Despite the temperature of minus 25 degrees Celsius (minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit), Gao is used to the cold. He has been doing his exercises every day for the last decade, always wearing just his skivvies.

With the Philippine economy hurting, some 25 percent of the population lives below the poverty line and millions have left the country in recent years. President Benigno Aquino recently signed into law an increase in alcohol and tobacco taxes to increase funding for education, health and agricultural spending.

Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara successfully rode a towering wave believed to be over 30 meters tall (100 feet) off the coast of Nazaré in Portugal on Monday. Reportedly, he's now broken his own world record, set in 2011 in the same spot. The waves in this part of the Atlantic Ocean are legendary among surfers.

Now, however, workers have begun the process of dismantling the 65 abandoned aircraft that clutter up airports around the country. At Lagos International Airport alone, there are 13 of them, including this one.

People in traditional "La Befana" costumes compete in the "Regatta of Befane" on the Grand Canal in Venice on Jan. 6. The post-Christmas Italian tradition of La Befana is observed on Epiphany, which celebrates the arrival of the three wise men in Bethlehem. The night before, families leave a glass of wine and some fruit by the fireplace to welcome the ugly, old witch Befana as she flies in on her broomstick to bring gifts to good children and punish the bad.

The consequences of Greece's economic crisis have been manifest in a whole host of ways. Now, months after the government more than quadrupled the tax on heating oil, cash-strapped Greeks are opting for cheaper, more polluting ways to stay warm -- like firewood. Merchants like this one in Athens may be legitimate, but authorities have marked a rise in illegal logging across forests in the countryside. The phenomenon has also blanketed the capital with a hazy layer of smog.
