Three areas in Visayas remain under public storm signal as tropical storm “Lawin†(Jelawat) maintained its strength and continued to move slowly over the Philippine sea, the state weather bureau said.
Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administrations (PAGASA) said that as of 4 a.m. Sunday, tropical storm Lawin was located at 485 km East of Catarman, Northern Samar (12.1°N, 129.5°E) packing maximum sustained winds of 105 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph.
Storm Signal No. 1 was hoisted over Eastern Samar, Northern Samar and Western Samar which is expected to experience winds 30-60 kph winds within the next 36 hours.
PAGASA advised residents living in low lying against possible flashfloods and those in mountainous areas under public storm warning signal 1 landslides.
Fishing boats and other small seacraft were advised not to venture into the eastern seaboard of Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao due to big waves generated by Tropical Storm "Lawin".
With its present speed, PAGASA said that Lawin moves North slowly and expected to be at 480 km East of Catarman, Northern Samar by Monday morning. By Tuesday morning, it will be at 460 km East of Virac, Catanduanes and at 595 km East of Baler, Aurora by Wednesday morning.
The weather bureau added the affected areas will experience "heavy to intense" rainfall estimated at 10 to 25 mm per hour within the 600-km diameter of the tropical storm.
PAGASA said that Samar province will experience rains and gusty winds. Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), the rest of Bicol Region, Visayas and Mindanao will have cloudy skies with occasional moderate to heavy rains.Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy with brief rainshowers and thunderstorms.
Moderate to strong winds blowing from the Northeast to Northwest will prevail over Bicol Region and coming from the west to southwest over Eastern Visayas, CARAGA and Davao Regions and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.
Light to moderate winds coming from the southwest to west will prevail over Palawan, rest of Visayas and rest of Mindanao and coming from the northeast to northwest over the rest of the country with slight to moderate seas.
PAGASA also issued gale warning as strong to gale force wind is expected to affect the eastern seaboards of Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
