One in seven Americans was living in poverty in 2009 with the level of working-age poor the highest since the 1960s, the US Census Bureau says.

The number of people in poverty increased by nearly 4m - to 43.6m - between 2008 and 2009, officials said.

The bureau defines poverty as any family of four living on less than $21,954 a year.

Meanwhile, new figures showed home foreclosures in August hit the highest level since the mortgage crisis began.

Banks repossessed 95,364 properties in August, up 3% from July and an increase of 25% from August 2009, said RealtyTrac, a company which charts the national picture.

The official US poverty rate in 2009 rose to 14.3% from 13.2% in 2008. In 2009, 43.6 million Americans lived in poverty, up from 39.8 million the year before, the third consecutive increase, the bureau said. - BBC

..way blema nang utang...importante nga nagpuyo nga hayahay....kanang utang sa papel ra man na.

This article is true. There is such a high unemployment rate here. I have friends who graduated college with degrees they cannot use. A Political Science Major who works at a bank as a bank teller.

The economy really is down in the dumps, as the saying goes.

i think not only in America having a highest unemployment. here..we have "leased laborer" very low payment and doing the same work what we have as a permanent worker. They are also a victim of that so-called "hired and fired" system!

This is sad to hear, Bambina. Even my friends that are nurses are having a hard time to find jobs; some of whom who just graduated nursing school and originally wanted to work in ER, ICU, MedSurg are working in Nursing Homes for the time being. It really is hard.

I do hope that the economy gets better ; i do hear that it is a cycle. Within 2-3 years it should bounce back again, I hope so.

This is so true. Our friend put an ad on the local newspapers about he is looking for hired help on the farm part time. He was all overwhelm by the many response. Desperate na gyud ang uban kay daghan pa kono sila ug bills to pay.

Yes, life in the US is harder than you can imagine. The only consolation is that, there are ways to survive through government programs like welfare, disability for those that cannot work and unemployment. Or when you are really broke, you can file for bankruptcy.

However, some people are taking advantage of the system or know how to play with the same so they get free stuff than those that deserved it better.

I know someone who applied for disability and food stamps along with his son on the basis of obesity. The mother was approved but the son wasnâ€™t because he needs 10 lbs to qualify as obese. What the mother did, he fed his son with mashed potatoes and fried chicken for one month. When he reapplied, he was approved. That means $1500 monthly check for them and $200 for food stamp, now they donâ€™t work the rest of their lives. All they have to do is to keep getting big to maintain the check. Sick!
