OFW Lands in Jail Due to Unpaid Credit Card Bills
« on: October 11, 2011, 08:30:22 AM »
by Susan K
Radio Inquirer

OFWs are often beset with problems that have nothing to do with their jobs overseas. One of them is credit card debt.

In rich countries, getting a credit card is easy. Our kababayan there are almost pushed to avail of the plastic money cards.

Some overseas Filipino workers carry not just one or two cards but five or six, or as many as they can.

But some kabayan apparently don’t know how to handle finances wisely. They buy too much on credit, forgetting that they are going to have to pay for the debts eventually.

Signing receipts with no cash on hand is easy. This is evident from the flashy personal things of many OFWs—like their cellular phones and hip gadgets which always seem new and top-of-the-line.

One of our OFWs recalled that her employer scolded her for buying a cellphone that was more extravagant and expensive than the one she was using.

We also have cases of OFWs scheduled for repatriation but who cannot get clearance because he or she is buried in credit card debts.

One Filipino worker thought that he was well on his way to escaping his debts after he bought a plane ticket home to the Philippines. He was shocked when he was not allowed to check in by an immigration officer because their database showed that our kababayan had a bad record of unpaid credit card debts. They checked him into jail instead.

Simple. Spend wisely and spend only what you can pay back. Ayaw pag utang og kahibalo ka dili ka maka bayad balik.

mao gayod, anna. naa koy amigo sa hospital, nurse siya (lalake siya). one time he said to me, "ah, meron ako tatlong jobs, doc , meron ko overtime at chaka meron ko kwarta, doc! i make more money than other nurses, kasama na ko sa sweldo sa doctor"

na kuratan gayod ko. i said to him , "you overtime so you can spend more money? that is foolish, pare. you work hard to spend , but in the end your body suffers because you work 16 hours a day 6 days a week. what do you have to prove? that you an make almost as much as a doctor?"

he's a good guy, but i don't understand his thinking. its as if he has to prove himself to me by monetary means.

ma sakit ang lawas og kalingaw trabaho, especially kalingaw mag overtime...

naa pod koy amigo nga doctor who works 7 days a week. kalingaw mo gasto pod. daghan lagi ang income, pero dako kaayo pod iyang expenses. mao gayod ni ...if you spend more than you make..way ginansya. correct gayod ka anna !

importante gayod og maka save ka sa imong kwarta. what good is money when your body suffers...or in the case of this article, when you become a slave to money (debt). tsk tsk !

Of course ! But the concept here is that in order to prevent oneself from being placed in financial jeopardy, spend less than you make.

The issue of spending more than one makes is the basis for debt. If one makes $ 70,000.00 a year, it would be practical to spend $50,000.00 and save the remaining $20,000.00. Of course, we have to take tax into consideration.

The problem many people have is: "It's okay to spend a lot because I make a lot." Sure that has truth to it, but if you're spending more than you make ; and starting to use credit cards to feed one's need to buy new gadgets, cars, clothes, etc, etc, ...then you're digging yourself a financial grave.

And this is exactly is what the original article is emphasizing.
