P40M being spent for Expo Pilipino

CLARK FREEPORT--The mammoth yet idle government asset that is the P3-billion Expo Pilipino here has finally gotten a new lease on life.

Breathing a fresh start to the 60-hectare park is the government itself through the Nayong Pilipino Foundation, said Crispin Cadiang, NPF’s coordinator for this P40-million undertaking.

The move, led by NPF executive director Charito Planas, is seen in business circles as daring because no private group has actually tried to turn it around and get over its tarnished past.

Ramos legacy

Built by the administration of former President Fidel Ramos to celebrate the centennial of Philippine Independence in 1998, the Expo Pilipino was mothballed in 1999, on orders of former President Joseph Estrada, after the Senate’s blue ribbon committee found proof of graft in the project.

In the business sense, however, the park still teems with facilities and features that can bring in income to the government’s coffers.

This was what convinced Planas to try the proposition of Rene Diaz, former presidential adviser for Northern Luzon, said Cadiang.

Rather than leave it to deteriorate or entirely go to waste, the NPF did its bit by using what remains of Expo Pilipino’s pre-colonial and colonial plazas, repairing or improving those or adding new attractions to the place, Cadiang said.

In doing so, it shared with the Clark Development Corp. the task of demonstrating that the Expo Pilipino is still feasible as a public or private enterprise.

Extension

“Nayong Pilipino sa Clark Expo” is how this improved part of the park is called.

“The concept is to make this an extension of the Nayong Pilipino in Pasay City,” said Cadiang, a musical composer and former Catholic priest.

At least 53 personnel, including a team of construction workers, are involved in this revival effort. Musician and historian Felipe de Leon has helped in the research and in the remaking of the area as a “buhay na yaman” or living heritage.

The replicas of the Ifugao Village, Kalinga Village and Barasoain Church, and the Convento Theater have been repaired and can now be used.

The replicas of the houses of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, Apolinario Mabini and former President Emilio Aguinaldo have been restored.

Existing structures

Still undergoing repairs are the Plaza, Arcadia, the museum of ecclesiastical and folk arts, and the outdoor theater.

The additional features are the Labuad Kapampangan, a mini-park of Pampanga culture, and the Karinan, a restaurant made of bamboo and nipa that sits right next to a vegetable garden and chicken farm.

Another feature is the “Dambana ng Paghilom (Shrine of Healing),” which is set to get its own garden of herbal plants.

Three of seven lodging cottages have been finished and are available for overnight rest or retreats.

The executive lounge, all made of hardwood and native materials, has hosted small conferences and meetings

Sorry, Way Nada but I beg to disagree na way sala si Erap.  I don't claim to know all the circumstances that led to his conviction but just one case, the Jose Velarde case, didn't he accept under oath that he signed that document?  He has disregard of his job or he didn't know what to do. 

GMA was already a legal president long before his conviction.  Yes, the ouster of ERAP led to GMA's presidency and we Pinoys should not make it a habit of putting a new president by ousting another president but at that moment, I am one of those people who believed Erap was unfit to be a president.  Was GMA the fit one?  I didn't think either but at that time, he was the only one who could rightfully became the successor, she being the vp at that time.  Magulo ang atong poliko diha but I wouldn't settle for erap either.  Just my opinion. Sorry to Erap supporters, my parents are two of them!

Duha ka testigo nga taga bangko [EPCIB] diin ang account Jose Velarde misud, si Terisita Bagsit ug ang VP sa bangko nga si Romualdo Tang metestigo nga ang tag-iya sa Jose Velarde account mao si Jaime Dichaves ug kining account gibuksan pa niadtong 1998. Karon... kadtong dukomento nga gipirmahan ni Erap 'bugos ducoment' to kay di man siya ang tag-iya sa account. Matud pa sa testimonyo ni Estrada; 'Pakitang tao lang kuno para motoo si Gatchalian nga diha'y iyang confirmation sa account aron mobayad si Gatchalian nga wa'y langan. GMA never have been the legal president. She became the president by force. Kadtong kaguliyang sa EDSA maoy naka presidente niya. Illegal man to. Ang legal mao ang eleksyon. You said it! That... "we Pinoys should not make it a habit of putting a new president by ousting another president". Boot pasabot ini nga wa diay ka mahiuyon sa ouster of Estrada through the rule of the mob... Kinahanglan rule of law gyud, sakto ba? Kini pung imong giingon nga 'unfit to be a president', mo-uyon ko nimo ini kay pareha ta ug opinion o panghuna-huna bahin ini, pero kung gipili si Estrada sa 'majority of the Filipino people'... ang atong duhang opinion mopailawom gyud sa tingog sa katawhan. Mao nay gitawag ug demokrasya. Di ba?

I think other nations have nothing to do if who is sitting as president in our country. For them that is how our politics is run by the people and it's none of their business. The important thing is that the business of diplomacy should run smoothly. The question of legitimacy is within the bounds of the system of laws only in our country. I think there is no international law recognizing who is legal or illegal president of a country or nation.

Kadtong opinion sa mga huwes nga siya si Jose Velarde huna-huna lang to sa mga huwes. Boot pasabot nga they presume guilt on Erap kay wa man gyud silay prueba nga siya si Jose Velarde. Kadtong iyang pirma wa man pud to mosud sa bangko as a legal document kay diha na may pre-arrange meeting between Dichaves and the bank officials.

Kining moingon ka nga; "He was caught red handed", mura gud ni ug hisakpan si Estrada nga nakapatay kay pula ang iyang kamot sa dugo. Pero ang kamatooran nga ang iyang sala diha lang nato nabasa sa mantalaan. Mismo ang gasuwat nga reporter way ikapakitang prueba nga nakasala si Erap. Puro lang ni mga isyu naa sa newspaper. Kung ikaw anti Erap nga nagbasa, di mura ka ug gisigihan lang ug sugnod sa reporter sa mantalaan aron mosilaob ka. Kung way newspaper o reporter ba nga dapig ni Erap then.... This is what we call a 'trial by publicity'.

Ang akong boot pasabot ini kadtong impeachment trial. Kadtong impeachment trial dili kadto trial nga criminal kundi trial nga political kadto. A criminal trial is presided by a judge but an impeachment trial is presided by politicians. Mao nga ang korte mao ang Philippine senate. Di ba wa man ma -impeach si Erap kay mura man ug naka amgo si Joker Arroyo nga ma-acquit siya di nag walked ang mga anti Erap. Pero tan-awa! Ang atong newspapers ilang gipakita nga criminal trial ang impeachment proceedings. Way dapig ni Erap mao nga mura na hinoon ug political lynching ang nahitabo.
