Close this MANILA, Philippines—Television host Kris Aquino revealed on Sunday night her ailing mother, former President Corazon Aquino, had stage 4 colon cancer and was now in "pain.â€
Speaking on her late night TV show, Kris profusely thanked Filipinos for their prayers and asked them to pray some more that her mother would be in less pain.
"If I will not be in my shows in the following weeks or months, it's because I want to be with her,†Kris said, trying hard not to break down.
Kris said the family decided to go public with the status of their mother's cancer. When they first announced her illness early last year, they did not say what stage Aquino's cancer was at.
The former president has been at Makati Medical Center for a month now since her doctors ordered her confinement to address nutritional needs. She is being fed intravenously.
Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, meanwhile, said a series of Masses will start on Monday for the "speedy and ultimate" recovery of Aquino.
Lim said Masses will be said daily at 12:15 p.m. until Friday at the Bulwagang Antonio Villegas at Manila City Hall.
"She (Aquino) gave us our democracy and served the country without any accusation of anomaly. So I hope we would always include her in our prayers," the mayor said during the regular People's Day at City Hall.
