Kwadro Ilonggo

To ensure raising the level of awareness and appreciation for the arts among the Iloilo community within the region and across the archipelago, Iloilo artists held "Kwadro Ilonggo" exhibit last Friday, February 8, 2013 at UP Visayas Art Gallery here.

“Kwadro”, a Filipino word which literally means frame, is the symbol for the canvas. Canvas of two dimensions is traditionally used for paintings. The room features inveterate Ilonggo paintings, drawings, sculptures and conceptual art of various Iloilo artists.

Painter and professor Roman C. Sanares said the art exhibit was organized by the UPV Chancellor's Committee on Culture and the Arts in celebration of the National Arts Month.

He said that activity aims to raise the level of awareness and appreciation for the arts among the Ilonggo community, in particular, and the region, in general.

Sanares, UPV Chancellors Assistant on Culture and the Arts stressed, “The whole nation is celebrating arts month. We too, should be celebrating for Iloilo which has many dynamic artists. Art is a must; everyone’s hoping that Iloilo one day will turn into a mecca of the arts and culture in Western Visayas.”

The UPV art gallery is not just visited by UPV students alone but also institutions coming from Iloilo Doctor’s College, University of San Agustin, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University and Central Philippine University.

Edward Defensor, one of the pioneers of Hubon Madia-as, the organization of Ilonggo artists, says he appreciates this year’s art works. He asserts that during his time, only three artists were considered active painters.

The exhibit has already collected more than what was expected for the event. Mr. Defensor clearly stated that, “To be an artist is a difficult occupation, especially here in the Region.”

Norce Salazar, one of Iloilo’s artists, is inspired by spiritual entities. His painting, a chess board, with a pone in gold, explained the pone to be courageous, deceiving and doesn’t have fear over other officials in the game. But Salazar said that he would leave the perception of his painting to the audience.

The other artists who contributed in the exhibit are John Ernie Acedera, John Paul Castillo, Kristoffer Brasileño, Lucell Larawan, Leoniel Cerbas, Lester Amacio, Marrz Halley Capanang, Martin Genodepa, Nelson Ferraris, Noel Ferraris,Norman Vincent Acedera, Patrick Gelpe, Nelfa Querubin, Rheo Nepomuceno, Richard Dela Cruz, Rock Drilon, Rommel Garde, Ronnie Granja, Trina Ascalon, Vicente Galino Jr., Winston Erwin Chiongson, Alex Ordoyo, James Salarda;

Carol Salvatierra, Jonas Mark Siva, Tacorda Eric, Jzy Tilos, Arel Zambarrano, PG Zoluaga, Alan Cabalfin, Allain Hablo, Angelo Duarte, Anthony Castillo, Benji Belgica,Boy Masculino,Cezar Arro, Dot Manzano, Edgar Ferraris, Edgar Gonzales, Edmar Colmo, Jo Anne Gancita, Harry Mark Gonzales, Jeffrey Guanlao, Jeline Laporga, Joel Ferraris and Joemel Mirabuena.

Ilonggo artists also exhibited their visual pieces at the Ayala museum last month, leaving Manila with tremendous scenes and high admiration for Ilonggo art.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
