Is The Philippines A Growing Power?
« on: April 21, 2009, 03:13:35 AM »
In a conversation I had earlier with some respected colleagues (fellow medical students and 3 professors), we talked about the current global market trends and the overall negative economic growth in the West, and even in Asia-Pacific.

One individual reminded me that the Philippines was actually in positive growth, and has enjoyed a stable unhindered growth rate of 5% for the past 12 years, and an overall growth rate that has maintained a 6-7% growth trend since 2005.

I was reminded, that the population of The Republic of The Philippines currently stands at 97,976,603 (July 2009 estimate).

I am completely in awe. Our country is truly in the verge of regional powerdom. In 2 years, the Philippines will have over 100 Million people. It is evident that resources will be needed to support the growing population of the country.

And my question to you all, fellow Boholanos, Filipinos, and foreigners is:

Will the Philippines remain a docile force in this new century? Or do you think this rise in population will trigger an expansionist policy for the Republic in regards to breathing space?

Do you, believe that the Philippines is a potential regional power? Or is already a regional power?

The population of the Philippines is equivalent to 1/3rd of the total US population.
Philippine's population is double that of Spain's population.

:)

It is becoming more and more obvious that the Philippines needs to assert a militant claim on the Spratleys as well as Sabah.

Malaysia, a nation with a population of less than 30 million is not in the position to dictate and assert its claim over Sabah, which is and has always been part of the Philippines, historically.

In my opinion, reclamation is necessary to assert national territoriality. A fulfillment of Philippine Manifest Destiny.

The Philippines, in its current situation, is in a verge of national explosion. It has the massive man power to assert its claim, and no nation in the region (ASEAN) is in the position to thwart Philippine claim.

It is clear that the Armed Forces of the Republic of the Philippines is one of the best trained militaries. The fact that the United States Army and Marines trains with the Philippine Marines in Jungle warefare and maritine practice is testament to the brevity of our troops. The world's strongest military learns from the Philippine military :)

I see similarity between the Philippine Republic of the day to the old Roman Republic, before the erruption of the 1st Punic War. You have a potential regional power, whose territorial claims are being rivaled by other powers.

It always annoys me how a small nation like Malaysia has the audacity to occupy and squat on Philippine soil. Sabah. Sabah is Philippine Soil, and has been part of the Sulu Sultanate for over 5 centuries. Even before the Spaniards came, Sabah was part of Sulu, which once ruled over southern Mindanao as well as northern Borneo. The language spoken in Sabah, as well, is similar and identical to Visaya/ Tausug.
