Is it possible to pass unnoticed for me in Philippines?
« on: September 08, 2009, 04:00:12 PM »
Hello!!

I need local´s advice :D

What I should do for go around Cebu for example and nobody realizes my existence? hahaha

I am very shy if I am observed, and get nervous till I reach a point that my mind is blocked, cannot think anything properly, stop to be able to use english and then I reach a panic point and have to leave the place asap in a taxy or something and be in my room  some time apart from people´s views.

I know I am weird but I get nervous when I am stared hahahaha. I hate beeing in the spot or beeing the center of attention.

My gf says for me will be impossible to pass unnoticed but if anybody has any tip to do it or to make people stop staring at us or to me I would appreciate it a lot :D

thank you :)

Ricardo, you, as a foreigner, will be under public observation since you are different from the fairly homogenous Filipino society.

My uncle, who is Irish-American, who goes back to Philippines w/ my auntie and cousin from time to time, does the best thing. And I advice the same: mingle with the people.

My uncle, who is Irish by background, has adopted the Filipino culture. He speaks Bisaya. And hangs around some of the locals, and family friends. Embrace the fact.

The people's stares is nothing negative, it is just a curious recognition of something foreign within their midst. Just say kamusta to them. hehehe!

Don't be shy. or in Bisaya, "Ayaw pa uwaw!"

hehehe!

You are a Spaniard, you should not be shy. Use your conquistadore instincts and interact. lol! C'mon, what would Magellan or Legaspi say if they were alive? hahahaha!

Laugh, friend!

Keko,

You will certainly be noticed because the color of your skin, the color of your hair, the color of your eyes may be different from most of the Filipinos'.

They may stare at you and smile at you but this would mean no harm to you.

In the Philippines, all whites are Americans. So, if you are in a village, people would be waving their hands and saying to you "Hey Joe, Hi Joe, Hello Joe." No surprise. But this won't happen if you live in one of our cities.

hahaha I interact beleive me and I know some tagalog and Visayan but I get really nervous if I get stared.

Guess where was one of my panic attacks? hahahaha in Valencia in your place.

All the people were staring at us all the time in the springs, I went to the sea and then a line of people staring from the edge of the beach hahahaha. After all we decided to leave cause started to not be able to speak english any more hahahah. And worst I got burn by the sun hahahaha

;)

I did all kind of filipino things, took ALL the public transports, eat the same as my gf and friends and I melt with them, even karaoke in tagalog!!! lol. I did not go to any place with foreigners only stardard filipino places but well I still have lot of phobia to be stared for lot of people hahahaha.

:)

Then I got too nervous, stop to think, I got dissoriented, and I reach a panic attack hahahaha, but not cause I am afraid is a panic attack of "omg all the people is staring at me" lol

Regards :)

lol!!!

Well i still hope your stay in Badjiang falls was 'fun' despite the people showing interest in you, hahahahaha!

Don't worry, amigo. Am sure it was a positive interest.

You know it makes Filipinos in the Philippines happy to see foreigners appreciating the local customs and embracing the customs.

I know that my Uncle Steve goes to the derbies with my uncles and maninoys whenever they go home. And he goes to the bars, or eats ginamos with them and just do what the Filipino do. hehehe!

Be safe and have fun pood!

Remember the age-old saying, "When in Rome...do what the Romans do."

This reminds me of my experience when I studied in Ukraine for a semester.
It took me a whle to adjust to the stares by Ukrainians and Russians.

I would get asked if I was 'Tartar, or Mongol' haha.

I would come out of Kiev Mohyla Academy of Law and Sciences, the institution that I stayed at for an exchange semester, and go to the gyro stand and the seller would always try to guess my ethnicity. Hahaha, what made me chuckle was being asked if I was Uzbek, hahaha!

No but, it takes a while to adjust to the stares; its natural since are visitors coming to a foreign country.

hehehe, enjoy enjoy! Have fun in our beautiful Philippines!

Ciao!

I do exactly as anybody else, but maybe that attracted even more attention hahahah ;)

Do not worry I enjoyed. I am going 4th of October again but this time I rented a flat so we will have more privacy and Cebu is bigger.

But my gf´s family told her to bring me to Ormoc. That place is not very touristic so maybe they are not too common with 25 yo foreigners so she is worried cause we will be the talk of the town hahahaha.

:)

Keko, you are Spanish. You won't be stared at that much here in Cebu because locales here are more used to it. What I mean is, there are alot of foreign students in Cebu universities, malls, bars, party places.. so you won't be stared at that much :D

How tall are you?

Keko, don't worry,, believe me.. you won't be stared at that much. I mean there really are alot of guests here in Cebu.

The only funny thing here is that, most locales address al foreigners as Americans or "Joe" even if they are clearly European.. lol

Keko, what you're saying the same happened to me
when I told my family my BF is American from
New York City, all they say well ok

But when I told them that his grandparents
were immigrants from Spain and his mother is
Puerto-Rican, oh boy all of them were in a shocked,
asking me how in the world you chose that man,
"Spaniards are very strict and you know what they
did to the Filipinos the maltreatment during
those time when  they discovered and
   occupied the Philippines"

But I'm telling you, my Spanish lover/husband is great!

Culturally I feel more at home with my Spanish gfs than the girls that i dated. Ive dated irish-americans, and french-americans, ive felt more at ease with latina girls because we have very similar traits. Like going to church, my x would always stress me to go to church with her, or for us to have dinner together etc. Other white girls want you to cook for them, hahaha! which isn't bad. (; )

One of my longest relationships was with a Argentinian-American girl.

I was very close to taking her home to introduce her to my parents. Pero, hahaha. not yet :P

Filipinas, tho, stand at the top of the totem pole for me.
I just have to find the right one.
*sigh*

Keko,

u should not worry too much about being stared at. in cebu, it's now a common sight to see foreigners with their lovely gf/wives. just be urself and dress down like a simple poor man, a shirt and jeans or shorts will do, it's hot in Pinas. simple and poor to avoid being a robbery victim, and simple so other girls will offer you a free drink  ;D

Yeah I was there with my basic things and worked   :) no security problems in my 23 days in Bohol, Makati and Cebu. So this time I will do the same.

And if girls offer me drinks I think my gf with have the Tampo mode on for long time hahahaha

Lorenzo, you got it right
the Latin women are the most beautiful,
sexy but very sensual, very particular with their looks
compared to  any nationalities in the whole world
and for one thing kadaghanan nila dili one-man-woman
tungod kay daghan motental nila sa ilang kagwapa
That's why the Lord said, that  our flesh cannot be trusted
Romans 8:5 "For they that are after the flesh do mind the
things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit
                         the things of the Spirit"

No, that is a friend of mine in makati :)

I am now in Cebu and it's beeing a nightmare :(

I am aproached all the time for pros, bayots, viagra sellers and beggars lol

As well I spotted some "pimps" at ayala mall. He was telling the girls where to move around the mall.

The only moment that I wasn't aproached was when I was with a 44 yo woman that a friend in Spain put me on contact to bring me to the hotel.

Is anybody in Cebu available for hang around? lol
