Dozens evacuated in Japan gas suicide--fire official

Agence France-Presse
First Posted 13:46:00 06/04/2008

TOKYO -- Dozens of people were evacuated Wednesday after poisonous gas fumes escaped from an apartment in what appeared to be the latest in a spate of suicides in Japan using detergent, a fire official said.

Japan has seen at least 182 cases since late March in which people killed themselves by mixing different kinds of detergent to generate hydrogen sulphide gas, following instructions found easily on the Internet.

In what was suspected to be the latest case, the body of a man, reportedly in his 20s, was found in his bathroom with bottles of detergent lying around on the floor, said a fire department spokesman in the central city of Kanazawa.

"Thirty-four neighbors evacuated due to the gas," he said. "One woman complained of sickness and was taken to hospital."

Like many cases in the past, the man posted a warning note on his door, which read, "Danger. Poison gas fuming," the spokesman said.

Authorities have urged Internet providers to voluntarily crack down on the websites and have voiced concern that wide media coverage is leading to more suicides.

The Japan Association of Chain Drug Stores also issued a notice to its 190 member companies last month, urging them to stop selling products believed to have been used in gas suicide attempts.

Japan has one of the world's highest suicide rates. It earlier saw a spate of group suicides by people burning charcoal burners to produce carbon monoxide.

In reaction to hard times, the Japanese commit suicide. More than 30,000 kill themselves every year. In the Philippines, economic hardship sometimes drives others to rob and in the process kill others.

In the end, the head count of dead bodies--Japanese suicides and Philippine homicides--may just be the same.

Suicide used to be an honorable act in Japan--a recognized way of sparing others the burden of minding one's personal problems. But the current most common way of committing suicide, as described above, is also harming the lives of others.

Harakiri now seems more honorable, many Japanese think. At least you only hurt yourself.

Suicide, as what they say which I also believe, is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Reading about this reminds me the story of Job. Reminds me of the necessity in keeping our faith in God no matter how hard the life we live. In the end, blessings will be rained on one who never yields his fear of the Most High and continues his love of Him.

Job was robbed of all that he had. By the Devil. And still Job did not quiver in his faith and Love of God. After all the tests, he was showered time and time again with blessings by the Most High.

Patience and Faith are truly great virtues.

Suicide, as what they say which I also believe, is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Suicides may 'solve' an individual's problems here on earth. But it is a selfish act. Selfish and unfair for those who loved and cared for the individual.

One cannot just 'cut' himself or herself off from the earth. And be expected to be forgotten.

The hearts of his friends, families, loved ones will ache for a very long time.

Dili fair.

Japan has one of the highest suicide rates among rich countries. Cultural factors are partly at play. Japanese society rarely lets people bounce back from the perceived shame of failure or bankruptcy. Suicide is sometimes even met with approval—as facing one’s fate, not shirking it. The samurai tradition views suicide as noble (though perhaps out of self-interest, since captured warriors were treated gruesomely). Japan’s main religions, Buddhism and Shintoism, are neutral on suicide, unlike Abrahamic faiths that explicitly prohibit it.
