Manay, TY for looking  my mango farm. Mango productiom is sometimes lossing
because of the rise and fall of price. One time in 2007, my two hectares lot grossed
 to almost a million.

My two hectares mango farm is now extrajudicialy divided to my children.

Once again we find ourselves enmeshed in the Holiday Season, that very special time of year when we join with our loved ones in sharing centuries-old traditions such as trying to find a parking space at the mall.  We traditionally do this in my family by driving around the parking lot until we see a shopper emerge from the mall, then we follow her, in very much the same spirit as the Three Wise Men, who 2,000 years ago followed a star, week after week, until it led them to a parking space.

MANGO PRODUCTION OF SAN ROQUE, DIGOS CITY
By felix b. daray

San Roque is a remote barangay that ranges hilly, flat and slightly rolling with silty loam soil. It has 438 hectares more or less or 1.53 % of the total area of Digos City. It has a population of 1200 with 470 households and with complete lighting system and potable water.

The main source of livelihood is farming. The early settlers in the  1940’s planted corn as their staple food. In 1970 , some farmers planted sugar cane as their main crop. Because of the rise and fall on the price of sugar, some framers planted grafted mangoes in 1982. Ten years after, mango production started to boom because of the great demand for export and for local markets. The farmers got high profit that even doubled compared to sugar cane production. With my neighboring farmers, I planted my two hectares lot with grafted mangoes. Using the modern technology of farming, we started spraying to bear flowers at 8 years old.  Mango fruit production became the main source of livelihood. Sugar cane farms were intercropped with mangoes. Years later, more and more farmers planted mangoes . The first farmer that boomed in mango fruit production was Arnold Nebria. He started a tenant in  a 5 hectare farm. With his net profit he earned he was able to buy lots and haulers . Many times he grossed to an average of more or less  one million pesos every harvest. Lately in September 2008, Victoriano Ramos, 70 years old farmer and kagawad of this barangay earned a gross income of almost a million. He said “ farming is learning by doing. Listen to anything you heard  and learned from other farmers and apply it actually in your farm.” Another farmer to mention is Benito Ayop who also boomed in many harvest. He said, “ farming is like a game or gambling. You spend and sometime you win or  loss. Don’t  stop and always have positive mind that you will recover the  next harvest.” According to them, the greatest enemy in mango production is successive and excessive rain during pollination stage. The pollen grain are washed out and few fruits are developed. At this point, you are losing . The price is up and down. You will have a break even if  the price is at least  P15 per kilo.

Mango production generates employments like spray men, harvesters , haulers and  packers during harvesting time. The fruits undergo quality control. The first class consists of the biggest fruits without  spots and rust  are exported to Hongkong and China. The second is the medium size for Manila and the third  class for local market in any place of the country.

When the leaves of the latest buds are matured, it is the ideal time to spray for flowering. Usually the buds, matures after 9 months. However, it can be sprayed at earlier time if you use chemical to hasten the maturity of the leaves. To control pests and fungal deceases , insecticides and fungicides are sprayed at the same because most of these chemical are compatible. At the age of 65 to 70 days hanging the fruits are bagged using old newsprints to control sucking insects. From the first day  of spray for flowering , you will count 105 to 110 and the fruits are ready for harvest.

Based on my sampling, a ten years old mango plant will give an average of  1 ton. If one hectare has an average of 70 plants per hectare times 1 ton, you will have 70 tons in one harvest. If the cost per kilo is P20, (the least estimate)  you will have a gross income of P 1.4 million in one harvest. For two harvests a year, a one hectare lot will grossed to Pph2.8 million a year. 40% of the gross income covers all expenses from spraying to harvesting. With the rise and full of prices, some loss to many thousands but when prices goes up, they get high profit.

Based on my survey in 2003, 100% of the total land area of San Roque is planted with grafted mangoes, the sweet and juicy variety ‘mango cebu’. 75%  of the mangoes produced in Digos City came from barangay San Roque. With an average of 70 mango plants per hectare, approximately there would be 30,660 plants aside from centennial mangoes that were  planted long before.

San Roque is regarded the “mango country of Digos City.” It becomes now a vast  green man-made forest of mango trees.

Riding in a cable car at Camp Sabros. This is the  latest
tourist attraction in Kapatagan, Digos City

Camp Sabros is located in the highlands of Kapatagan, Digos City which is about an hour ride from the city proper. Digos City itself is an hour ride from Davao City. Going to Camp Sabros is easy. If you came from Davao City, ride any bus from Ecoland Terminal and  drop off at the new Digos terminal. Then take  a pedicap going to the old Digos terminal and from there, vans and jeeps are available for hire at the old Digos Terminal. P80.00 for the jeep fare and just tell your manong driver to stop at the military checkpoint at Sitio Sabras. From the checkpoint, you will hike about 30 minutes (about a kilometer distance) to the campsite.

Durian City is Davao City

According to a wikipedia article on Durian, there are actually some debate whether the durian is native to the Philippines, or it has merely been introduced. Anyhow, Davao City has become the durian basket of the Philippines and is otherwise referred to as the Durian City.

EARTH HOUR 2009

Global warming is the most serious threat the world faces today.

The warning signs are present , even here in the Philippines . Drought is felt during the rainy season and typhoons strike in the summer months. Sea water level is on the rise and more areas experience flooding . These are only some of the symptoms of a serious and growing global phenomenon: climate change. This environmental crisis puts the lives of millions at risk, hitting the poor countries hardest.

Digos City, the capital city of Davao del Sur celebrated Earth Hour 2009 at Rizal Park. At exactly 8:30 pm, March 28,2009 lights around the park and City Hall were put off. Film showing was shown to the public , the causes and effects of global warming. The lights were turnred on after one hour. More live entertainments with dances, songs and  combo shows made  Earth Hour 09 celebration successful in this city.

It was participated by different sectors, public and private schools in the city. The celebration was chaired by Hon Mayor Arsenio Latasa in coordination of the city tourism office and ex-city kagawad , Dondon  Llanos .

Let us save mother Earth.

Top 10 Things You Can Do to Reduce Global Warming

By Larry West, About.com

Burning fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, oil and gasoline raises the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and carbon dioxide is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect and global warming.

You can help to reduce the demand for fossil fuels, which in turn reduces global warming, by using energy more wisely. Here are 10 simple actions you can take to help reduce global warming.
1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Do your part to reduce waste by choosing reusable products instead of disposables. Buying products with minimal packaging (including the economy size when that makes sense for you) will help to reduce waste. And whenever you can, recycle paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and aluminum cans. If there isn't a recycling program at your workplace, school, or in your community, ask about starting one. By recycling half of your household waste, you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
2. Use Less Heat and Air Conditioning
Adding insulation to your walls and attic, and installing weather stripping or caulking around doors and windows can lower your heating costs more than 25 percent, by reducing the amount of energy you need to heat and cool your home.

Turn down the heat while you’re sleeping at night or away during the day, and keep temperatures moderate at all times. Setting your thermostat just 2 degrees lower in winter and higher in summer could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year.
3. Change a Light Bulb
Wherever practical, replace regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. Replacing just one 60-watt incandescent light bulb with a CFL will save you $30 over the life of the bulb. CFLs also last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, use two-thirds less energy, and give off 70 percent less heat.

If every U.S. family replaced one regular light bulb with a CFL, it would eliminate 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gases, the same as taking 7.5 million cars off the road.
4. Drive Less and Drive Smart
Less driving means fewer emissions. Besides saving gasoline, walking and biking are great forms of exercise. Explore your community’s mass transit system, and check out options for carpooling to work or school.

When you do drive, make sure your car is running efficiently. For example, keeping your tires properly inflated can improve your gas mileage by more than 3 percent. Every gallon of gas you save not only helps your budget, it also keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
5. Buy Energy-Efficient Products
When it's time to buy a new car, choose one that offers good gas mileage. Home appliances now come in a range of energy-efficient models, and compact florescent bulbs are designed to provide more natural-looking light while using far less energy than standard light bulbs.

Avoid products that come with excess packaging, especially molded plastic and other packaging that can't be recycled. If you reduce your household garbage by 10 percent, you can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
6. Use Less Hot Water
Set your water heater at 120 degrees to save energy, and wrap it in an insulating blanket if it is more than 5 years old. Buy low-flow showerheads to save hot water and about 350 pounds of carbon dioxide yearly. Wash your clothes in warm or cold water to reduce your use of hot water and the energy required to produce it. That change alone can save at least 500 pounds of carbon dioxide annually in most households. Use the energy-saving settings on your dishwasher and let the dishes air-dry.
7. Use the "Off" Switch
Save electricity and reduce global warming by turning off lights when you leave a room, and using only as much light as you need. And remember to turn off your television, video player, stereo and computer when you're not using them.

It's also a good idea to turn off the water when you're not using it. While brushing your teeth, shampooing the dog or washing your car, turn off the water until you actually need it for rinsing. You'll reduce your water bill and help to conserve a vital resource.
8. Plant a Tree
If you have the means to plant a tree, start digging. During photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. They are an integral part of the natural atmospheric exchange cycle here on Earth, but there are too few of them to fully counter the increases in carbon dioxide caused by automobile traffic, manufacturing and other human activities. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.
9. Get a Report Card from Your Utility Company
Many utility companies provide free home energy audits to help consumers identify areas in their homes that may not be energy efficient. In addition, many utility companies offer rebate programs to help pay for the cost of energy-efficient upgrades.
10. Encourage Others to Conserve
Share information about recycling and energy conservation with your friends, neighbors and co-workers, and take opportunities to encourage public officials to establish programs and policies that are good for the environment.

These 10 steps will take you a long way toward reducing your energy use and your monthly budget. And less energy use means less dependence on the fossil fuels that create greenhouse gases and contribute to global warming.
