DepEd readies refined curriculum

Davao City (13 November) -- Public schools nationwide will again face a more refined basic education curriculum on school year 2010.
Department of Education (DepEd) Director Dr. Lolita Andrada told Davao media that the department is preparing to implement the refinement of the existing curriculum with 22 schools serving as pilot areas.
"We are aiming to upgrade the mastery of content as well as set high expectations for students' learning," she said.
Certain changes have been integrated in the new curriculum which the department found to be very crucial and significant to be included in the process of teaching and learning.
One of the refinements made is for the teachers to set clear objectives as well as become clear in the whole process of teaching. The curriculum will then allow teachers to value more on what the students should know and learn at a particular lesson.
Another integration made is the principle of multiple intelligence now being applied by the teacher in teaching the class.
Multiple intelligence is a theory of Dr. Howard Gardner who introduced the other kinds of intelligences which schools must also consider. Some of these intelligences included linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalist.
The Philippine education now recognizes such theory and applies its value in the newly-refined basic education curriculum. It then requires teachers to acknowledge the other forms of intelligence in delivering their lessons everyday.
Also, the secondary curriculum is now injected with value formation especially on having the passion for work. As young as elementary or high school, students will already be exposed o technology and livelihood lessons and activities.
"This way, at a tender age, they will already determine their career pathways," she said.
Andrada bared that DepEd will make sure that core group teachers will all undergo proper training on how to apply the new refinements. They are then expected to transfer their learning to the other teachers. (PIA)
