Christmas Footnote From Boy Guingguing of Bohol Sunday Post

Bohol Sunday Post

Truth to tell, we really don't want to compete the business of eye specialists. We do have our business to mind and never will we intend to intrude in the " I business". Until, this one, where a first person account is virtually best understood to everybody who cares to read our "I peroration."

In the spirit of Christmas, pardon us for using I in this thesis. After all, I still relish the thought of saying "I love my own".

Own I did of a Christmas message I want to impart to all those who make the Sunday Post surviving 20 Christmases past. And still counting.

Indeed, Christmas is the time of the year where one reminisces the good, old days gone by. To the materialistic, the Christmas goodies that go with each celebration are all that matters at this time when the greatest story ever told in all of mankind. But there's more than material things to the birth of our good Lord as we recall two days from now. Truth is, if not most of the times, we only see the forest but not the trees.

All told, what we are obsessed up is the thought of the center of the celebration which is the giving of material things courtesy of kin and kith, ninongs and ninangs and all those who dispense bundles of joy during Christmas.

We seem to forget that Christ came into this world through the miracle of birth in the dilapidated manger in Bethlehem to save us from our sins. Now wonder no more why He is called the great messiah or savior. Why I sound surprisingly religious? It's because I considered myself a repentant sinner.

Where before I admit that I wallowed in sins in terms of all imaginable vices. You name it, I have it. But everything in this world has its own end. Including the limits of how long who long will you defy the Ten Commandments of God.

I have my own share of trials, challenges and their corresponding failures and frustrations.

But if this is God's will, who am I to argue.

I committed indiscretions and infractions to God, to my wife and to my fellowmen, then what do you expect? A reward from heaven? Ano ka sinusuerte? As I have been telling people who care to listen that what happened to me when I was in the verge of death two years ago (due to kidney failure), I said to myself, this is it.

Citing the critical situation as a case of crime and punishment, I did not hesitate for a moment to contemplate that what happened was within the bounds of expectations. Just because I committed sins of unmanageable proportions, then I deserved to be punished. That's the long and short of it!

This is my secret of why some people were asking why I was not as depressed when I supposed to suffer from a deadly ailment.

My secret is that I accepted my fate with no rancor in my heart. I accepted it as part of God's infinite wisdom to serve wake up calls to those who seem to forget their mortality. Wake up calls to those who think they will live forever.

Sometimes, the runner stumble and I did. No hurt feelings.

I even thank the Lord that He gives me the kind of disease that can still be healed. Can you imagine if the Lord God give the kind of ailment that is incurable.

That is enough to suffer depression. No amount of damage control in our emotions can do the trick.

Anyway, as I contemplate meet my renal ailment head on through a kidney transplantation, I was elated no end that some good samaritans assured me of financial support.

My heart is oozing with joy when people like lawyer Anos Fonacier, Richard Uy of FCB fame, Geesnell and John Yap of Bohol Tropics, Marlito Uy of ICM, City Mayor Dan Neri Lim, Gov. Erico Aumentado, former Cong. Butch Pichay and many others who do not wish to be identified who pledged assistance should I decide to go under the knife.

It was even a comic relief that current joke circulating around that with a powerhouse cast of donors to my kidney operations, I would end up having more than two kidneys. And of course, all brand new at that.
