The Asian Development Bank (ADB) chief said Friday the impact of swine flu on the regional economy had so far been limited, but the bank was ready to provide necessary aid without delay.

"There are some effects on tourism, but we have not seen any grave situations," ADB president Haruhiko Kuroda told a symposium in Tokyo when he was asked about the impact of the virus on the Asian economy.

"But we are strictly monitoring what could be expected to happen when the influenza spreads," Kuroda said.

"During the outbreak of bird flu, we provided several hundred million dollars for ASEAN countries, and we are ready to provide similar assistance immediately, when necessary."

The World Health Organization declared a global pandemic on Thursday, with the virus affecting nearly 29,000 people in 74 countries -- including several Asia-Pacific countries. The region's worst-affected countries are Australia and Japan.

Kuroda told the symposium he remained optimistic about the prospects for the Asian economy.

"I'm watching the Asian economy optimistically," Kuroda said, reiterating the bank's forecast that Asia's developing economies would grow 3.4 percent this year and 6.0 percent next year
