Like elevated cholesterol, elevated
triglycerides are
closely linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular
disease, including heart attack, stroke, coronary
artery diseases, and atherosclerosis. Therefore it is
important that your triglycerides must also be checked.
It is important to note that some medicines used to
lower cholesterol do not work as effectively on trigly-
cerides.
Things that you should know about triglyceride to
safeguard to heart health. There are 5 things to know:
1. You can have high triglycerides even if your cholesterol
level is normal. Usually it is being done fasting and it is
being called lipid panel which includes the good and
bad cholesterol and triglycerides.
2.High triglycerides are more dangerous for women than
men. She's high risk for heart disease.
3.You can be slim and still have high triglycerides ( and
cholesterol) levels. Being slim is not a guarantee of having
a healthy blood lipid levels. However, having a larger waist-
line---- being shaped more like an apple -- is associated
with having high triglyceride levels and a higher than average
risk of heart disease.
4. Triglycerides can damage more than just your heart.
Elevated triglycerides can also lead to liver damage and
pancreatitis ( inflammation of the pancreas).
Hypothyroidism ( too little thyroid hormone) can lead to
high triglycerides. The reason for this are 2 things. First,
all of these disorders are related to a reduction in blood
supply to those organs. Second, in people with high trigly-
cerides, fats gets deposited in the internal organs, including
the liver, pancreas, thyroid gland and the heart.
5. There's plenty that you can do to lower your triglycerides.
Things you can do to make your good HDL (good cholesterol)
go up are the same thing you can do to make your triglycerides
and bad cholesterol go down. elevated triglycerides levels should
be treated early and agressively with diet, exercise, and any other
therapy your Doctor may recommend. Try to lose some weight
if you are overweight. Losing 10 lbs can bring down triglycerides
and cholesterol significantly. to get rid of that 10 lbs excess weight,
avoid junk food, watch portion sizes ( I love to eat- I don't watch
my portion which I should), and make sure you;'re getting adequate
calcium and omega 3 fatty acids ( fish oils). Since it's difficult to
get these nutrients in food, ask your Doctor whether you should
consider supplements. Also, limit alcohol consumption as this has
been known to elevate triglycerides.
