What is your view on China's Ascension to Superpowerdom?
« on: March 13, 2011, 03:42:36 AM »
China's future and its soon to be 1st Aircraft Carrier. When this ship becomes active, it will propel the PLAN (People's Liberation Army Navy) into a Blue-Water Navy. China plans to initiate building a 2nd carrier this year.

Will America be soon eclipsed by the Chinese Dragon this century?

An estimate of global economic players in the future.

It is expected that China will eclipse USA within 3-4 decades.

i can only hope that it doesn't bully its smaller neighbors.  my only concern as a filipino is its insistence on claiming all of the spratlys, saying that such claim is historically based, while our claim is only part of the island chain, within the existing UN Convention on the Law of the Sea that stipulates that a country owns the sea and the resources thereof, including the seabed and rocks or islets, within 200 miles of its territory, which is the location of the kalayaan islands (the particular islands that our country claims; not the whole spratlys chain).

should china bully its way through and prevail in its claim of all of the spratlys, what would keep it from claiming the philippines as well, using the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea if it serves its interests, because if all of the spratlys go to china it would mean that the philippines is within 200 miles of chinese territory?

i shudder to think of a malevolent superpower.  i'd rather have the u.s., hands down.  you know, like they say, we'd rather have a bastard that we know than a bastard that we don't know.

on the other hand, it seems like only yesterday when the japanese were predicted to take over the u.s. in terms of economic and technological might.  some predictions just don't come to pass.

in the case of china, well, one never knows how long the powers-that-be or the ideology that gives them power can stay.  realpolitik rides on the wings of change and a people get restless for some change.  who would have thought that hosni mubarak can go that way...

A very good point. A democratic China? (no, not Taiwan). It would be the world's largest democracy.

China did not honor the former MacMahon Line, which the British drew that separated British India and Qing China. The People's Republic of China repudiated the MacMahon Line when she invaded India's Arunchal Pradesh in 1962, thereby starting the Sino-Indian War. The war was quick as it was decisive. It was a swift Chinese victory, as China overwhelmed and took the offensive, routing the Indian defense and thereby claiming what it held as 'historical territory'.

By doing this, China effectively silenced India's former compaints of Chinese take over of the former Tibetan State. China invaded India proper, and won.

The Chinese also later invaded Vietnam in 1979 after the Vietnamese government invaded Beijing-backed Khmer Rouge. The Chinese pulverized Vietnam's Northern border provinces and disciplined Vietnam in what Beijing claimed as a "warning against further encroaching".

Be it as it may, thank God Philippines is not in the Asian land continent. With how weak the Philippine Military is right now; its focused more on fighting itself (combating insurgents and separatists) than foreign invasion, there is no way the Philippines could even defend itself from a Chinese invasion.

The nation, Philippines, would be swallowed if such an invasion took place. And it would be made a 'Chinese extraterritorial province'.

The Chinese Province of Guangdong has a greater population than Philippines. China has 22 provinces. On average, the population of 1 Chinese province is equivalent to 2-3 nations.

You have a strong point, eric. Right now, China's middle class is growing. The last time i read, she has an estimated 300 million people who composed the upper-middle class. Which in itself is a feat (since America's entire population is ~ 305 million). But China has a long way to go until it reaches it zenith. Meaning China will still be modernizing for a longer time. Yes, China has over 300 million people that composes its upper middle class- upper class, but that leaves about 1 Billion who are working/ lower middle class.

The fear here is the rising Chinese consumerism. China is growing, industrializing and progressing. Her middle class ranks are growing. And with this growth, comes in consumption of raw natural resources. As China grows, she will continue to increase her consumption of natural gas, petroleum, methane, coal etc.

There will be a time, in the future, when China's military will defend its natural interest, which could be the acquisition of raw, rich natural resources.

The problem here is that if China becomes a regional hegemon, there will be no power in the region that can counter her clout (military, and economic) if ever an occasion arises where She (China) would invade another country for resources. With over 1.3 Billion people at her disposal, she could swallow her neighbours and incorporate it as part of a 'Greater China'. Very easily.

Over a 100 years ago, my great-grandfather left China for greener pastures in the Philippines.

Now, 100 years later, Filipinos are leaving Philippines to look for job / work in the greener pastures in China.

Oh have the tides changed.

China's defense budget to grow 12.7 pct in 2011: spokesman

BEIJING, March 4 (Xinhua) -- China said Friday it plans to raise its defense budget by 12.7 percent to 601 billion yuan (91.5 billion U.S. dollars) in 2011, compared with an increase of 7.5 percent last year.

The year's draft defense budget was 67.6 billion yuan more than 2010, and accounted for about 6 percent of the country's total budget, said Li Zhaoxing, spokesman for the annual session of China's national legislature.

"The government has always tried to limit military spending and it has set the defense spending at a reasonable level to ensure the balance between national defense and economic development," said Li.

The former foreign minister said China's defense expenditure is transparent and defensive in nature.

"There is no such thing as a so-called hidden military expenditure in China, and the budget is subject to auditing from the government and military," he said.

The bulk of the spending goes towards moderately improving armament, military training, human resource development, infrastructure of grassroots units and the living standards of the servicemen, said Li.

China's defense budget is almost evenly divided in three parts -- the living expenditure of the servicemen, expenses for training and maintenance, and spending on equipment, said Major General Luo Yuan, a researcher with the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Military Science Academy.

DEFENSIVE AND TRANSPARENT

"The limited military strength of China is solely for safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity and would not pose a threat to any country," said Li.

"China is committed to peaceful development and a national defense policy that is defensive in nature," the spokesman said during a press conference.

Compared to the world's average, China's military spending is low given its 1.3 billion population, vast land and long coast lines, and its ratio of military spending to gross domestic product (GDP) is lower than many countries Li said.

While China's military spending amounts to about 1.4 percent of its GDP, "that ratio in India is much higher than 2 percent," said Li in response to a question from an Indian journalist.

China's military spending is dwarfed by that of the United States which, at 725 billion U.S. dollars, accounted for about 4 percent of the country's GDP for the 2011 fiscal year, said Luo.

"It is natural for China's defense budget to slightly fluctuate, as it is impossible to always rise at a high rate," said Luo.

To some extent, the increase in military spending was made to keep pace with the rising consumer price index (CPI), said Luo.

China has the world's largest military, with 2.3 million active personnel and 1.2 million in reserve. By comparison America has under 3 million in total active and reserve personnel.

What is your view on China's Ascension to Superpowerdom?

at this point i'm beginning to dread it.  so far china had bullied the philippines enough.  in terms of foreign policy, china had dictated to us to keep us in line, and we cower in obedience.  ugh.  are we afraid that if all the chinese urinate together our country will sink? >:(

Without American support, who and what will prevent the Chinese from dominating the Philippines?

The Philippines, unfortunately, is already dominated by the Chinese. The rich Chinese business moguls control the Philippine economy and businesses.

The current president of the Republic of the Philippines, Benigno Aquino III is, himself, part Chinese.

I feel somewhat at odds because I cannot fully talk down on China and the Chinese people because I myself have Chinese blood flowing in my veins.

China is the homeland of my great-grandfather and my great-grandmother (my mother's side).

Isles,

Perhaps the Filipino Schools should start teaching Mandarin as a required language. I believe in the next 2-3 decades and up to a century from now, it will be China that will be the Hyperpower of the World.

In fact, it is only a cycle.

Before the rise of European Imperialism, it was China who was the world power, before the Ming Dynasty closed its doors on the world and enacted a Xenophobic Closed-Door Policy, by which it allowed the puny western powers to dominate the world. And left China backwards.

The Rise of China is viewed by many Chinese as the re-establishment of the proper order of things. The Center of Gravity now pulls to the direction of Beijing...

never mind ethnicity here.  it's the citizenship one holds and one's identity with one's country that are at the crux here.  besides, just because some chinese blood is flowing through someone's veins one could allow one's self to be bullied.  we can't even allow our own brother or sister to bully us.

US Defense Secretary, Robert Gates, arrives in the People's Republic of China and is met by the Chinese Honor Guard.

Gates went to talk to Chinese President Hu Jintao on the alarming Chinese military buildup that now threatens American Hegemony.

China has released new Chinese Nuclear Submarine wolfpacks into the Pacific. This threatens the American Pacific Fleet...

The problem here is that with China's military spending at almost 100 Billion Dollars annually, who in the region can stop her? America is too over-stretched and too economically dependent on China right now. This is a strategic nightmare for America. (If there was a war with China and America, all China would have to do is to demand payment of the billions of dollars of American debt that she has purchased, and the US economy would come crashing down).

India, and Japan are the only countries in Asia that can pose a minor threat to Chinese hegemony. However, there are limitations for the two.

Japan recently suffered a catastrophic natural disaster and many of her Air Force has been destroyed by the tsunami. Let alone the military limitations. China has ecclipsed Japan as the 2nd largest economy in the world (second only to America...). Japan has no nuclear weapons. China has thousands of nuclear ICBMs.

India. India is precariously located under the belly of China and also shares a border with a Chinese ally, Pakistan. Both China and Pakistan are nuclear powers and have enacted a containment policy on India. As we speak, China is building a massive sea port near Gwadar, which Pakistan has agreed to allow the Chinese Navy to position its forces there.

These are truly alarming scenarios. Who can stop China?

Corruption up among China government officials
« Reply #54 on: April 01, 2011, 11:00:09 AM »
China's anti-corruption watchdog has said that 106,000 officials were found guilty of corruption in 2009, an increase of 2.5% on the year before.

The number of government officials caught embezzling more than one million yuan ($146,000; £91,000) jumped by 19% over the year.

The government says the increase is due to better supervision of the problem.

But corruption is consistently rated the number one concern by Chinese, ahead of pirated goods and pollution.

There is widespread anger at the ostentatious lifestyle enjoyed by some Communist Party officials, police chiefs and bosses of state-owned companies, says the BBC's Quentin Sommerville in Beijing.

With no independent oversight of the ruling communists, corruption has bloomed, our correspondent adds.

The results of a survey published in the state-run China Daily indicated nearly 60% of respondents thought corruption was doing the most damage to China's reputation abroad, ahead of counterfeit and shoddy products and pollution.

The Communist Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection - the anti-corruption watchdog - said on Thursday it would target corrupt executives of state-owned enterprises.

A number of senior executives are already being investigated or have been convicted for taking bribes or other charges, such as falsifying accounts.

One, the former head of oil giant Sinopec, Chen Tonghai, was sentenced to death last year for taking nearly $30m in bribes. His sentence has been suspended for two years, which means it is likely to be commuted to life in prison.

The head of the China National Nuclear Corporation - overseeing the country's nuclear industry - was dismissed and is under investigation over allegations of bid rigging in nuclear power plant construction worth $260m.

Analysts say the system of the government appointing executives to state-owned corporations and a lack of subsequent supervision allows corruption to flourish.

Chinese women trafficked for prostitution
« Reply #55 on: April 01, 2011, 11:57:22 AM »
AP - January 24, 2011 5:18PM

TRANSNATIONAL crime gangs are trafficking a growing number of Chinese women to Southeast Asia, Europe and Africa where they are forced into prostitution, a Chinese newspaper said today.

The official China Daily cited a senior police officer as saying most of the trafficked women are from poor rural areas and are cheated by criminal gangs into thinking they are leaving to pursue overseas studies or well-paying jobs.

Most of China's trafficking cases are still domestic, with women being taken from poor areas in southwestern China's Yunnan and Guizhou provinces to be forced into marriage elsewhere in the country, said Chen Shiqu, head of the anti-trafficking office of the Ministry of Public Security, according to the paper.

But "there has been a growing trend for organised transnational human trafficking crime groups to target Chinese women for forced prostitution in foreign countries", Chen was quoted as saying.

The report said Chen did not provide specific figures, but added that police rescued 15 Chinese women trafficked to Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, for prostitution in November. Two Chinese suspects were detained at the time, it said.

Chen cited Malaysian police statistics as saying that 5453 Chinese women suspected of working as prostitutes had been detained in the year to last November.

China is both a destination and source country for human trafficking and anecdotal evidence suggests that cross-border trafficking of women is on the rise, according to the United Nations Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking's website on the situation in China.

Destinations for Chinese trafficking victims include Thailand, Malaysia, and countries in Africa, Europe and America, according to a 2010 fact sheet compiled by the UN project.
