Sight for Kids Program in Alburquerque, Bohol

‘Early bird catches worm.’

This could apply to the 1,001 primary and elementary public school students in the town of Alburquerque.
School principal Anunsacion Salon was first to submit complete Snellen’s Test results of all the primary and elementary pupils under her jurisdiction to Tagbilaran City Host Lions Club.

The school’s 32 pupils are the first beneficiaries of the Sight for Kids Program of the City Host Lions Club. It provides vision screenings and free eyeglasses to children with error of refraction.

According to a study made by the U.S. National Eye Institute in some Asian countries, myopia (nearsightedness) causes significant vision loss in more than 15% of children under the age of 15. Half of all cases of refractive error (nearsightedness, farsighted-ness, and astigmatism) remain undetected and untreated, the leading cause of blindness in children and adolescents in uncorrected refractive error. Also, since learning is often visually based, uncorrected vision severely hinders a child’s development.

Day after the City Host Lions Club received the Snellen’s reports from the principal, some members of the club immediately trooped to Albur Central School headed by its president Lion Fely Lim as early as 8:30 in the morning.

With Lim were chairman of the Sight First Project Lion Edna Malalis, an optometrist; and the members of the project Lion Eumere Malalis, an optometrist, Lion Rufing Malalis, Lion Betty Labado, Lion Velma Lim and Lion Babie Melicor.

Lion Edna Malalis brought her sensitive and modern instruments for eye examination so that the students do not have to go to the optical clinic in the city. The Lions were very thankful to Mayor Ugdoracion who was instrumental in transporting the beneficiaries who are living in remote barrios of Albur to the town proper in order for them to avail the services of the Lions.

However, the Lions urges principals who have not submitted the Snellen’s test results to please submit the earliest possible so that their pupils with error of refraction could avail of the free eyeglasses from the Lions. For inquiries, contact Lion Fely Lim, president of Tagbilaran City Host Lions Club; Lion Nap Nazareno, president of Bohol Island Lions Club; and Lion Joe Torralba, president of Dagohoy Lions Club.
