Construction works at the cluster sanitary landfill in barangay Danggay, Albur town is set to start as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) issued an Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) for the project.

Albur Mayor Jose Ugdoracion told the Chronicle that the ECC was issued to the project's proponent, the Philippine Tourism Authority.

According to Ugdoracion, upon receiving a copy of the ECC, he immediately called up Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Bohol chief Nestor Canda who assured him that the project will not contaminate groundwater.

"The latest sanitary landfill technology will be used for this project," Ugdoracion pointed out.

He said only residual waste will be accommodated in the facility.

In fact, construction materials will be made as a by-product of the mixed compacted garbage and the layers of aggregates, according to Ugdoracion.

The Albur cluster sanitary landfill will relieve the garbage disposal problems of 13 neighboring towns that are maintaining their own dumpsites.

The project is a major component of the Panglao Tourism Estate (PITE).

The open dumpsite of Tagbilaran City has been limited to accommodate only wastes coming from Dauis.
