Public Storm Signal No. 2 remains hoisted over Eastern Samar as tropical storm "Lawin"(Jeluwat) slightly intensified, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)said Saturday afternoon.
Weather forecaster Fernando Cada said that as of 4 p.m. Saturday "Lawin" accelerated its speed from 95 kph to 105 kph while its gustiness rose from 120 kph to 135 kph.
Cada, however said, the tropical storm has small chance to make a landfall.
Lawin has small chance to make landfall but if ever to make a landfall, it will affect extreme Northern Luzon, particularly Batanes, and then traverse over the Philippine sea in moving out towards southern Japan, Cada said.
With its present speed, he said that Lawin moves at north northwest slowly and expected will linger in Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) within a week due to its slow movement.
Cada added that "Lawin" would also affect eastern Visayas while localized thunderstorm brings rains in Luzon, including Metro Manila. Mindanao will experienced isolated rainshowers.
The weather agency said that Eastern Samar is expected to experience winds at 61 to 100 kilometers per hour within the next 24 hours.
Storm Signal No. 1 (30-60 kph winds) was hoisted over Sorsogon, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Northern and Western Samar.
PAGASA advised those residents where signal storm were hoisted to be wary of possible flashfloods and landslides. The weather bureau also alerted those living in coastal areas against big waves.
Fishing boats and other small seacraft were advised not to venture into the eastern seaboard of Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao due to big waves generated by Tropical Storm "Lawin".
Meanwhile, PAGASA also issued a thunderstorm advisory in Metro Manila at 5:55 p.m. Saturday, alerting residents to take precautionary measures against heavy rains, strong gusty winds, lightning and possible flash floods.
