Bataan lines up activities for 75th Araw ng Kagitingan

PILAR, Bataan, March 9 (PNA) -- The provincial government has lined up various activities for the commemoration of the 75th Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) on April 9.

The annual event remembers the heroism and sacrifices of Filipino and American soldiers who fought the Japanese Imperial Army during the World War II, particularly at the exact site of the battle in Mount Samat in Barangay Diwa here known in history as the "Fall of Bataan."

With this year's theme: "Parangal sa mga Beterano Tungo Bayan na nararapat sa Pilipino, Pilipino na nararapat sa Bayan," the celebration will kick off on April 2 with the 12th Padyakan sa Bataan, a mountain bike circuit race, at the Karagatan Bay View Peaks in Mariveles town.

On April 3, the "Galing Bataan" trade fair that showcases the province’s native products will be held at the Plaza Mayor in Balanga City.

At 6 p.m. on the same day, it will be the Bataan Cooperatives and Entrepreneurs' Night.

The next day, April 4, students from various public and private schools will compete on the Tagisan ng Diwang Bataan history quiz that will take place at the Vista Mall in Balanga City.

On April 5, it will be the Bataan Senior Citizens' Night at the Plaza Mayor in Balanga City.

On the following day, April 6, the Bataan Seafood Festival which showcases the province's wide array of seafood products will be held in Balanga City.

On April 8, it will be the Armed Forces of the Philippines drum and bugles parade that will start at 6:30 a.m. from Plaza Mayor to Provincial Capitol.

On the same day, it will be the parade of floats in Balanga City's major roads and highways at 3 p.m.

At 4 p.m., the "Parangal sa Beterano" will be staged at the provincial capitol grounds.

The main event will be on April 9 with the wreath-laying ceremonies at the Dambana ng Kagitingan (Shrine of Valor) in Mt. Samat in this town.

The event is expected to be attended by key national and local officials, living war veterans and their spouses, other distinguished guests, tourists and students.

Meanwhile, a drum and lyre competition will be staged at the provincial capitol quadrangle on the same day at 4 p.m.

At 6 p.m., there will be a concert by local artists and the grandest pyrotechnics display in honor of the veteran soldiers.

The annual event will culminate with the Freedom Trail, a 160-km ultra marathon and ultra relays and bike tour, from Mariveles, Bataan to San Fernando City in Pampanga and then to Capas, Tarlac on April 10. (PNA)
