Mura bitaw ug abstract ug vague kaayo ang punto ani niya, pero somehow I get the feel of what he's saying.
It's probably the first time that a massive employment dislocation on a global scale is happening. It's now easier to compare notes because of our cyber connection. And everywhere from US, NZ to Italy, our friends are echoing the same gripes about the bleak economic prospects. I think this is not just a temporary thing or being in the trough of an economic cycle. A new economic reality is taking shape.
In Japan, which long prided itself on its life-time employment policy, probably half of employees are presently being dispatched by temporary placement agencies. Temporary employment arrangements and annual contracts are now the rule. The case of Toyota worker who committed suicide inside a Prius that was being moved through the production line is emblematic of the spiritual angst in the wake of the Toyota scandal, which also symbolizes the secular slide of the Japanese economy. Just a few years ago, Toyota was almost synonymous to the "safety" trademark. Now I notice that cars veer away every time a Prius comes nearby.
I read here at Yahoo that in the US, medical doctors are leaving private practice in droves and just apply as medical personnel in larger, better-funded hospitals.
Being a self-employed professional, I really feel it's harder to make a living now just going by the same old routine. Kinahanglan bag-ong diskarte, flexibility, and being always on the lookout for new opportunities.
“With the downturn in the economy, the elimination of jobs, and the increased desire for work-life balance, people are looking for more stability, greater fulfillment, and increased satisfaction from work. Unfortunately, most people are still operating with an old set of career rules that no longer apply to today’s employment reality.
Now is the time to take control of your career destiny so you can enjoy greater work-life balance, security fulfillment and satisfaction. The secret lies in understanding the new employment reality and rewriting the rules of what a career can be.†- by Paula Caligiuri, Ph.D.
