Improve the quality and effectiveness of your resume
« on: February 26, 2010, 03:53:08 AM »
To start off with, here are 11 quick tips you can easily implement to improve the quality and effectiveness of your resume:

1. Never use ALL CAPS.

2. Always include your name, mailing address, email and phone numbers (include your full Country telephone code so employers do not have to do extra work to contact you).

3. Most applicants think it is important to include an Objective section within the résumé. However, unless this will be your first job in a new field of employment, the Objective section should be left out. The qualifications and experience listed on the résumé will indicate the type of employment you are seeking. Instead of an Objective, consider including a section titled Professional Profile or Highlights of Qualifications.

4. A common mistake made on résumés occurs when the applicant includes a list of duties or responsibilities with past employment. Rather than listing duties or responsibilities, opting to list ACCOMPLISHMENTS will provide an advantage in a competitive job market. For example, a teacher who has listed "Responsible for assigning grades and maintaining student records" does not have the advantage that would come by listing as an accomplishment, "Over a five year period, led 94% of students to mastery at 80% or higher on standardized tests." Also be sure to included quantitative data when possible.

5. Use bulleted lists whenever possible, and keep descriptions as brief as possible. Do NOT use complete sentences (and do NOT use periods at the end of each line). It is possible that the employers will be looking at hundreds of résumés as they seek to fill job vacancies.

6. Applicants who include the most significant information in the most concise way will have an advantage as the employers are pressed for time in seeking highly qualified candidates. For example, instead of saying "I have opened several hundred new customer accounts and maintained superior customer satisfaction ratings," split it into short bullet points that stand out more and are easier on the glancing eye of employers:
· Opened hundreds of new customer accounts
· Maintained superior customer satisfaction ratings

7. Do NOT use "I," "me" or "my" in the résumé. Your name is on it, and the employer knows that all information contained therein is relative to you.

8. Do NOT include references. Employers expect all applicants to be able to provide references as needed and upon request.

9. For jobs that were held more than 10 years ago, include only the job title, employer, location, and dates of employment. (Do NOT include accomplishments.) The accomplishments you achieved more than 10 years ago are not nearly as important as what you have done recently. However, it is still a good idea to establish the career history by including basic information about this past employment.

10. For multiple positions held at a single company, do not list the same company name each time. Rather, list only the position title, dates the position was held, and the accomplishments.

11. Finally, keep in mind that whatever is listed near the top of your résumé is what will become the employers' first impression of you. So, if your education is more impressive than your work history, list the education closer to the top. However, if your education is not as important as your experience, list the education near the bottom. In all cases, list your education and experience in chronological order with most recent activity listed first.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
