Forum tackles copyright, intellectual property protection

The Bohol Librarians Association, Incorporated (BOLA, Inc.) in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Holy Name University Library System will hold a seminar entitled, “Basics of Copyright and Related Right and The National Library as National Center of ISBN, ISSN AND ISMN: A Forum” which will be held on November 27, 2006 at the Holy Name High School Multi-Media Center Janssen Heights, Dampas District, Tagbilaran City.

The objectives of the seminar are (1) to recognize the importance of the protection of Intellectual Property Rights, (2) to encourage creators of Intellectual Property to register their works and at the same time safeguard the public right and general information, dissemination and conservation of knowledge and culture, (3) to educate public and government officials or the importance of IPR protection and enforcement throughout the country, (4) to effect close coordination among government agencies responsible for the protection of IPR.,(5) Coordinate with government and non-government organization to implement IPR information dissemination campaign and develop advocacy programs, (6) to disseminate the important role of the National Library as national center in the issuance of ISBN, ISSN AND ISMN, and (7)to encourage publishers and musical composers to have any kind of work bears the ISBN, ISSN OR ISMN as the case may be.

This forum is not only intended for librarians but also for information officers, press media, local newspapers editors and writers, school publication editors and writers as well as journalism teachers of the colleges and universities. The seminar fee is Five Hundred (P 500.00) Pesos per participant inclusive of lunch, 2 snacks, papers and certificate.

The resource speakers are from the National Library of the Philippines namely: Mrs. Elizabeth Arevalo, the Chief Bibliographic Division who will discuss on the “Basics of copyright and related right” and Mr. Virginio Arriero, the Acting Chief Public Administrative & Special Services who will discuss on ISBN, ISSN and ISMN and promoting Philippine Bibliography. The seminar will start with a holy mass to be officiated by Fr. Felino B. Javines, Jr., SVD and to be concelebrated by Fr. Ramilo Mapaye, SVD, the HNU Vice President for Administration and HNU High School and Elementary Chaplain respectively. The oath taking of the new set officers for calendar year 2007-2009 will be held before the final blessing to be administered by Congressman Edgar M. Chatto of the first District in the Province. The following are to be inducted: Corazon B. Garcia, President; Nicandro M. Pagaran, Vice President; Ma. Vida Cloma-Aparecio, Secretary; Erlinda Rule, Treasurer; Ma. Nila Mejorada; Gina Macalos-Galbo and Simfrosa Baloco, PRO; Fatima F. Belderol and Rosario Pabulario, members of the Board.

The opening ceremony will start at 10:00 a.m. Mr. Nicandro M. Pagaran, BOLA Outgoing President will give the statement of purpose, Fr. Romeo P. Bancale, SVD, HNU Vice President for Academic Affairs will give the Welcome address, and Congressman Edgar M. Chatto will give a “Keynote address”. The forum proper will start at 10:30 a.m. and this will end at 5:00 p.m. with the giving of Plaque of Appreciation to the resource speakers and distribution of certificate of attendance to the participants.

The early registrants of this forum are Mrs. Mary Allen P. Oral and Jovita Ybañez of University of San Carlos; Miss Metchelin Loquias of Santo Tomas College of Danao City; Mrs. Violeta Rusiana of Siliman University; Mr. Geminiano Sabanal of Foundation University and Mr. Maurito Jumamoy of Inabanga Municipal Library.
