These are Chinese women who have feet that are deformed as a result of the drastic measures that are taken to keep their feet small such as having their toes or arches broken and of course, of wearing shoes that are much too small. In China a sign of femininity for girls is to have small feet. The result is feet that are deformed. -- http://www.worldoddities.com/

we may not know, hubs. maybe it is still prevalent in the countryside. the big chinese cities won't tolerate this inhuman practice.

Zhou Guizhen, who is 86-years-old, shows one of her bound feet where the bones in the four small toes were broken and forced underneath the foot over a period of time, at her home in Liuyi village in China’s southern Yunnan Province, February 2007. Villages in China where women with bound feet survive are increasingly rare but the millennium-old practice nevertheless took almost four decades to eradicate after it was initially banned in 1911. -- http://www.myseveralworlds.com/

This is an old Chinese custom. This is no longer practiced in China, actually, the ones who enforced this old custom were the Qing (the last dynasty that ruled China). Interestingly enough, the Qing rulers were not ethnic Han Chinese, but were originally from Manchuria.

Sadistic, indeed. Many Chinese women had no choice on the matter as their foots were bound at an early age. As early as 2-3 years old and continued till their adult years. This was an example of human cruelty, specifically targeting the women.

My great-great grandmother did not have her foot bound because she was a working woman from the countryside. Women who were from the poshy cities of Imperial China or women of noble blood had their feet bound.

When my Lola Nating went to China in the 1930s she was able to meet her grandparents, as well as her grand aunts and uncles, there were some relatives who had their foot bound. Luoy kono to kai lisod mo lakaw og gi bound ang tiil.
