The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has decried as misleading a newspaper ad that urged President-elect Benigno Aquino III to end the department’s allegedly anomalous electronic
passport project.
In a letter to the
Philippine Daily Inquirer on Friday, DFA spokesperson Eduardo Malaya said there was “an apparent attempt by the proponents of the advertisers to mislead the public,†adding that the issues that were raised had already been ruled on by the
Supreme Court in favor of the DFA.
The ad, published in the Inquirer on Thursday, said the ePassport system was “a graft-ridden project that was implemented by Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo involving the precipitate and totally baseless termination by the DFA of an ongoing build-operate-transfer contract†with BCA International Corp. for machine readable passports (MRP).
Malaya said that contrary to the ad’s claim, all transactions pertaining to the scrapped machine readable passport and the ePassport projects were legal and transparent.
