Leaders of peasant organizations Hugpong sa mga Mag-uumang Bol-anon-Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (HUMABOL -KMP) held a protest-rally in Ubay town last week in commemoration of the 19th anniversary of the Comprehensive Land Reform. The rally was successful.
Close to 300 farmers belonging to the two militant groups attended the rally. The theme was Pakusgon ug Ibandera ang Pakigbibisog alang sa Tinuod nga Reporma sa Yuta ug mga Kadaugan Niini! Batukan ang Dayag nga Pagpanglutos sa Rehimeng GMA!
High on top of the issues raised by the protesting farmers were on the failure during the 19 years of CARP in coming up with genuine land reform by the state; failure to solve the problem of poverty;
liberation of agriculture, growing militarization, political killings, among others.
The protest rally started with a march from the Ubay Cultural Center enroute to the Ubay Police Station. The marchers suspected that elements of the 15th
Infantry Brigadewere stationed near the PNP-Ubay. The rallyists also suspected that the same army troopers were responsible in dismantling five makeshift structures located in the military reservation in barangay Fatima. The houses were owned by militant farmers. They are members of the Homeowners and Farmers Association, a group affiliated with the militant Bayan Muna.
.
From the PNP station, the marchers proceeded to the Ubay Public Market, where the rally was held.
