Around 70 kids from different barangays of this town aged 11-16 years old completed the three-day summer basketball basic training and clinic 2009 on May 25-27 at Ramon Magsaysay gymnasium.
The program came after local officials realized the significance of the basic principles of basketball in inculcating discipline and sportsmanship in children at the young age.
Through the initiative of Mayor Eutiquio Bernales, Ubay Sports Commission president Nonito Nambatac invited a team of five from Cebu to conduct and facilitate the training which was headed by Elmer Boy Cabahug, then PBA player and head coach of the University of the Visayas Green Lancers based in Cebu.
The first day was focused on the rules and regulations, positions, and the imposition of penalties or punishments for any violation committed as part of their discipline.
Parents were also invited during the culmination in the afternoon of the last day of training to witness the overall performance of their kids.
In his message, Mayor Bernales said the kids will be grouped as a team and will still continue their practice to sustain what they had learned from the trainers.
Awards were given to deserving kid participants in sportsmanship, best in passing, speed drill, shooting, dribbling and best players.
Lawyer Dexter Apostol Bernales, municipal administrator and Municipal Sports Commission executive director, was one of the officers responsible in the successful event which was the first training ever conducted in this municipality. (GIEVERDS-MPIO)
