The humble French fries
« on: January 23, 2012, 04:56:56 PM »
Despite the name, this dish originated in Belgium, the term “French Fry” simply means to deep fry. In Belgium you can buy fries in “Friteries” or in a “Frietkot,” they are served with a large variety of sauces or can be eaten on their own. Traditionally they are served with a spoonful of mayonnaise.

When it comes to Western pop culture, I think fries are the true king of the fast food – speaking in terms of popularity and preference. Interesting historical fact: Shortly after the May 1940 invasion of Belgium by the Wehrmacht, Hitler attempted to ban “French fries” because they were the central nutritional source of the Belgian resistance due to their simplicity and availability. -- http://listverse.com/

far from humble, this is expensive for the majority in our country.

imagine, not so long ago, the u.s. took to calling this 'freedom fries' to show its displeasure with france.  it turns out to be belgian and the adjective 'french' has nothing to do with france after all. ;D

Some fast food chains rely on artificial trans-fats which are quite harmful and unhealthy.  A regular size French fries contains around 4-7 gm of trans-fats.  According to health experts, more than 2 gm of trans-fats in a day can prove to be extremely dangerous for the health.
