A cross between a Ghost Chile (Bhut Jolokia) and a Trinidad Scorpion. Fruity taste gives way to terrible suffering. The Scoville scale ranks foods in terms of heat units, measured per unit of dry mass. Adrian Sherratt for the Guardian

Carolina Reaper
1,569,300 SHU

As a rule, the hottest chillies are the ugliest, and the Carolina Reaper is one ugly so-and-so. Five hundred times hotter than Tabasco, if your mouth can do the maths. Photograph: The Oxfordshire Chilli Garden/Alamy

While agreeing with www.theguardian.com/ that the Carolina Reaper is the hottest chili to date, www.crazyhotseeds.com rates it at 2,200,000 SHU. Of course, runners-up have equally high ratings (like the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, rated at 2,009,231 SHU).
