Despite its address on
Las Vegas Boulevard – and for that matter its swanky appearance – the
M Resort, which opened in 2009, is very definitely not on the Strip. Perched on a low bluf ten miles’ drive due south of Mandalay Bay, the southernmost Strip casino, the M is instead a particularly upscale “locals’ casinoâ€. While targeted primarily at the generally prosperous residents of the surrounding suburb of Henderson (technically a town in its own right), it also benefits from being the first casino seen by drivers arriving from California as they enter the
Las Vegas Valley. Although MGM Resorts contributed $160 million of the total $1 billion construction costs, the M was built by the Marnell family, the original owners of the Rio. Their design and construction firm was also responsible for the Mirage, Bellagio and Wynn, and the M incorporates lessons learned from all those proper-ties. The Rio’s early years proved how much local customers value good service, attention to detail and, in particular, well-priced eating and drinking, while design elements from the latest Strip casinos permeate the new property. It has nonethe-less struggled in the face of the recession Penn National Gaming bought it in late 2010 for a mere $230 million, though so far little has changed. - Rough Guide
