The Department of Tourism (DOT) gave assurances that the Philippines remain safe as tourist’s destinations for foreign and local tourists despite the bombing in Congress.
Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said the country’s tourism industry is operating normally and that major tourist destinations such as Boracay, Palawan, and Bohol remain safe.
Durano reported that despite the alarm triggered by the Congress bombing, there had been no cancellations of packaged tours and bookings arranged prior to the blast.
“This only proves that the Philippines remain an ideal travel destination where its attractions far outweigh untoward incidents. We expect to achieve our goal of bringing in more than three millions guests this year,†Durano said.
Durano then stressed that the bombing at the House of Representative has been contained and does not reflect the situation in the Philippines as a whole.
“Based on initial investigation, the explosion was mostly likely personal in nature and meant only to harm a particular member of Congress,†Durano pointed out.
Durano noted that the DOT is now coordinating with various travel and tours operators to monitor the traffic of both domestic and international visitors to major island destinations and to ensure the accurate flow of information. - Mayen Jaymalin
