Cebu City to put up ‘Devotee City’ starting Jan. 4 for Fiesta Señor
CEBU CITY, Dec. 31 (PNA) -- The Cebu City government on Jan. 4 will begin setting up a “Devotee Cityâ€, a row of container vans located near the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño that would provide free housing for out-of-town Santo Niño devotees who have no place to stay in the city, an official said.
Devotee City 2017 chairman, Roberto Cabarrubias, said they intend to have the soft opening of the Devotee City on Jan. 12, and the grand opening on January 13.
He said some 120 container vans will be set up at the lot near the old Compania Maritima building near the city’s port area to accommodate about 3,000 devotees who cannot afford a place in the city.
To qualify to stay in the Devotee Citym the devotee must come from beyond Carcar City in the south and Danao City in the north. Those from outside Cebu will also be accommodated upon presentation of their bus or ship tickets.
The Cebu City Council earlier approved a PHP1.3 million budget for the Devotee City, PHP540,000 of which will be allocated for hauling the container vans.
Some PHP299,900 will be spent on food and water for the volunteers; PHP200,000 on cash incentives for personnel manning the facility; PHP112,000 on T-shirts for volunteers; PHP100,000 on some construction materials; PHP35,000 on office supplies for registration; and PHP30,000 on first aid medicines.
Cabarrubias said a portion of the Devotee City might be used to house street dwellers and vagrants who will be rescued by the city. (PNA)
