Boholano doctor Theodore (Doyet) Dumaluan, EENT, would kayak paddle around the island of Cebu, not just for the personal triumph of being able to accomplish the feat, but with hope and prayers of accomplishing something more.
With Paddle Philippines behind the activity, Dumaluan, hopes to draw attention and popularize kayak paddling within the Visayan Islands.
Most people love being outdoors, but a few men venture into something adventurous. With this passion for adventure comes the passion of being with nature, of open spaces, of the vast expanse of the ocean, the depths of the sea, of the forest, of the mountains and its peak, and more.
It is this love and passion that prods the outdoorsman to learn the necessary skills, to respect, study and care for the environment and to master the art of survival in the wilderness.
It is however to the credit of adventurous men that man has come to rule the world. These are the people who had trail-blazed the wilderness and braved the seas to discover new horizons for the rest to follow.
With prayers this could spur tourism activities that may include kayak island hopping, kayak exploration of mangrove areas, coves and rivers and kayak sporting events.
Aside effect could be environmental awareness and conservation. As more people join kayak activities they would be exposed to the waters and be proximately close to appreciate the value of clean pristine surrounding. If more people become aware and concerned, they would become proactive and may initiate personal activities to help in their own way, the conservation of our waters. And if these people gather as one, they may be able to actually convince their District Representatives to frame up legislation in support of the advocacy.
The kayak to be used in this first Cebu Island circumnavigation would be a solo sea touring kayak, made up of fiberglass laminated wood and plywood. It is of a design made for by Doyet himself. The kayak was fabricated in Panglao Island of Bohol by Bugsai, a local kayak maker.
Doyet, the paddler would be ably supported by a ground crew of three people who would oversee the needs of the circumnavigator, and be ahead of him by land, to identify suitable areas for rest and refreshment. This endeavor is estimated to take at least eight days but may stretch to ten.
Those who might be interested to join or paddle through one or more legs of the trip may get in touch by texting or calling (0919) 479-2809 and ask for "Manong."
