Baguio City joins Rizal Day commemoration

BAGUIO CITY, Dec. 28 (PNA) --The local government unit (LGU) of Baguio City will join the nation in commemorating the 120th death anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal in a simple wreath laying ceremony on Friday at the Rizal Monument, Burnham Park here.

The Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines – Baguio City with representatives from the Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC), Kababaihang Rizalista, Knights of Rizal, veterans groups and other city officials will offer flowers at Rizal Monument.

The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) will honor Rizal with a 21-gun salute as the national flag will be lowered to a half-mast.

City Mayor Mauricio Domogan once quoted the writings of Dr. Jose Rizal which stated, “It is a useless life that is not consecrated to a great ideal. It is like a stone wasted on a field without becoming a part of any edifice.”

At the time, Domogan encouraged every citizen to be a part of endeavor meant to uplift and bring goodwill to each member of the society, and the community as a whole.

During the occasion, Domogan will serve as guest of honor and speaker while Baguio City Rep. Marquez Go will open the wreath laying ceremony.

Rizal led the Philippine revolution through his writings mainly the “Noli Me Tangere” (Touch Me Not), published in Berlin; and “El Filibusterismo” (The Filibuster), novel satires exposing and criticizing Spanish clergy and electoral.

Rizal and other Filipino revolutionists were accused of rebellion and sedition.

He was briefly incarcerated in 1892 and exiled to Dapitan in 1893 where his works as physician, teacher, artist, farmer, poet, and linguist were polished and applied to the community.

He was imprisoned during the early part of 1896 and executed through firing squad on December 30, 1896.

His remains were interred in an unmarked grave at the old Paco cemetery, later exhumed, brought to the Rizal house in Binondo, and buried properly at Luneta Park (Bagumbayan) where his monument stands.

The theme for this year’s commemoration is “Rizal: Bayaning Global, Aydol in Juan.” (PNA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
