HELP
« on: September 03, 2008, 11:41:43 PM »
Hello to everyone. :)

My name is Mela and I am from Quezon City. I am a student from the University of the Philippines Diliman and our group in Araling Pilipino 12 is to report on Boholano Literature. I am hoping you could help our group by replying to this topic with links leading to websites containing information on Boholano literature and hopefully, copies of Boholano writings--be it precolonial or modern literature.

I would truly appreciate it if you help me.
Thank you very much.

Truthfully,
Mela del Prado

Hello, pink_caramel,

Try surfing for works of:

- Marjorie Evasco, a Palanca Awardee. She is a Boholano.

- Karyapa, a babaylan/priestess whose prophecy on the coming of the white men would bring dire consequences. Her prophetic warning is noted as a precolonial poem.

Happy hunting  ;)

Would anyone know of Boholano folklore? Or any story that was passed through generations by oral means? Any Boholano epics?

There is the legend of the "Kampanang Ogis" (Silver Bell)

My recollection is sketchy but the gist of the story is this: During the Spanish colonization in Bohol, a priest cast a curse (I can't recall what and why). Thus, the kampanang ogis fell from the bellfry and rolled down into the Abatan river in Maribojoc never to be recovered by anyone who will attempt to get it. Accordingly, on a clear day and when the river is not muddy (when it is not raining upriver), an outline of the bell can be seen at the river's bottom. It has been said that a father of a former Governor attempted to recover the bell but failed.

The legend of the kampanang ogis is also part of the Eskaya folklore. The Eskaya is a "tribe" living in the highlands of the towns of Duero and Guindulman. Although now they get to where modern clothes and speak the local dialect, they have their own set of alphabets and language.

You may search for articles of Jes Tirol, our local historian.
