Who Ordered Arlene Karaan to Attack a Radio Broadcaster?
« on: March 08, 2009, 10:41:35 AM »
By the Bohol Chronicle

The recent incident involving an executive assistant of the city mayor was condemned as an "affront to press freedom."

Cebu based Boholano broadcaster Choy Torralba of dyRF-Cebu went on air last Thursday to lambast the city mayor for condoning, instead of repremanding Arlene Karaan, an executive assistant of the mayor who doused liquid of extremely offensive odor to the face of broadcaster Nestor Daarol inside the offices of station dyTR last Feb 28.

He said that the act of Karaan was unbecoming of a public servant especially that she holds a key position in the office of the city mayor.

Since the city mayor defended the act of Karaan, then the public can suspect that she was ordered to do such act to the broadcaster, Torralba asserted.

He reminded the mayor to be transparent in his public actuations especially when they involve people's money being indiscriminately used by public officials.

"Public accountability was what broadcaster Daarol was asking, thus does not deserve such act from a public official," he continued saying that if she was indeed cleared of such accusations of unliquidated cash advances, then she has to explain in public and not resort to such dastardly act."

Torralba recalled that he got the city mayor convicted of slight physical injuries up to the Supreme Court when he was slapped  by the mayor at the City Airport in June 1988.

Because of what he knows of the mayor's personality, he was not surprised on what his top aide is also doing, the radio commentator said.

I wonder how anybody can defend such a foul act under any circumstances. I wonder why Karaan is still allowed to report to work. I wonder why the mayor, who should have been embarrassed by the blatant misdemeanor of his underling and imposed appropriate sanction on her, is instead defending her...

It seems to me that behind this incident, there is something more foul-smelling than the septic waste thrown at Daarol...

I wonder the same, Bene san.  I surf the net every morning hoping to see a news that Mayor Lim denounced the filthy actions of Karaan.  I can't seem to find justification of her throwing filthy water to Nestor Daarol no matter what the circumstances maybe considering that she is supposed to be a civil servant.

I heard that she was a nice person but my big question is why go down to the drain? The allegations, if not true are so easy to refute by presenting evidences and challenging Daarol to check with the Accountant's office or COA.  But why threw water instead of behaving like decent human beings?  That is the question...

they were playing wise.  maybe they think, kung sumbagon nila si daarol, naay case on physical injuries labina kung ma hospital.  kung sablig sablig ug tubig menos or wala.

they are as dirty as the water that they splashed on daarol. shameful.

I would like to know what are the disciplinary measures against Mayor's aide Karaan for  edangering a media man inside of his mdia facility.

The GM Lito Responte of DYTR should also come up with something even if it means temporaarily not allowing Karaan to enter the radio station outlet untill the case has been solved.

I notice that Lito has been keeping silent in all of this does he not have any coarse of action as our Bohol KBP President and our Bohol Tri Media newly elected President?

how is Lito protecting our media from people who loose they're cool and attack media personnel.

I agree with earlier statements thst why is that Mayor allows Karaan to stay on tax payyer's dollar's after what has happened here?

Regardless if Daarol is wrong or right in his allegations to his programs listeners Karaan has no right to do what she has done.

I am kapoy of this topic and what the people get away with because if it was anyone else not connected to the mayor they would have been in deep poo poo!

Grazie, you said earlier that you did not know the scheldule of the mayor's report

It is every Saturday moning from 8am-10am they also have a website for dytr but its better if anyone calls into the mayor during his report to ask why is it that Karaan is still working and still on the payroll?
if i was a voter here and i do not care how powerfull the people make him hear I would call in and ask the question anyway.

Take care!

I thought it's only boxing that Mayor Dan Lim patronizes? Now he's also into mudfight! Unless he cleans up his name in this mess, it will forever be linked to the drainage issue and the septic splash on his media critic... Talking about politics being dirty, I think they should start counting coliform not only in Tagbilaran Bay but also in the city hall.

diha gyud konoy ga-order nga buhaton to? no way they gonna tell us. karaan could have done it herself alone because any individual who is outraged up to some degree can do that. the Mayor's reaction is quite mysterious, but his enemies won't believe him anyway, should he say anything in relation to the incident. Firing Karaan or condemning her action won't eliminate the question as to who was behind it. The Mayor would rather bite the blade and pursue the war. He has still more "bullets" left. Sad.

This is Bohol's version of Yellow Journalism. 'Yellow' for the color of the urinal water thrown on dissenting mediamen.

Since the city mayor defended the act of Karaan, then the public can suspect that she was ordered to do such act to the broadcaster, Torralba asserted.

I can see that "not reprimanding is the issue here?"

From the act, Torralba then led the public to believe, and in fact instigated the public to believe that it was ordered.

And the Chronicle did the trick.

A lousy editor can see the bias here:
Take note of the word "extremely."
For an editor with a 10 cent worth, he would know extremely is a ceiling journalism word. For if you would be asked how extreme was it, i'd guess you would say sooooper filthy.

But was it? There was not even a finding saying it was but the word said was foul. Now its extreme.  ::)
