Tagbilaran Now A Crime City?
« on: February 06, 2008, 09:37:52 PM »
By Ric V. Obedencio

The label that this city is a “crime city” following recent shooting incidents was taken as a challenge by City Mayor Dan Lim.

Although he found no basis on such "tagline,” the mayor said in his weekly Mayor’s Report over dyRD yesterday that he takes it as a challenge because it gives him the opportunity to exert more effort in the fight against criminalities.

The apprehension that Tagbilaran has turned into a “crime city” surfaced after residents were alarmed on at least six shooting incidents and several burglaries which started the New Year. All cases remain unsolved, including the 7th shooting incident last Monday.

Tagbilaran is now too crowded and it seems that dealing  to positive way of living  (beautiful buildings, big cars, many permanent foriegners residents, modern-styles teenagers around, everyone owns celphones-young and old-bisan tong dili na maayo mokita). A crime City - it is a high price for such improvement. >:(  Delinquencies  are  everywhere so we must have to be vigilant enough. Our Tagbilaran City is still a beautiful place to settle down anytime.

I believe it is better to deal with crime through efficient law enforcement operation and not by splashing our newspaper front pages with shrill headlines such as "crime city" or "crime capital."

I remember a feature about a crime-infested inner city in the US whose vacant walls were splashed with huge graffiti, apparently by vagrant youth and other criminal elements. When you step into the area, the atmosphere simply makes you fear for your life. The walls simply proclaim, "This is crime city." Everyday, the graffiti just seemed to increase with the crimes, petty and serious.

Then the city decided on a clean-up operation, whitewashing the walls, coupled with increased police patrol of the area. The criminality had dramatically decreased.

Graffiti and panicky headlines work similarly on the human mind--they attract what they announce.

I agree 100%, Bene San!

It surely doesn't help to "dramatize" to the nth degree the situation but on the other hand, it's about time for the law enforcers to do their job of guarding our city and province from these criminals. If the media keep on labelling Tagbilaran as a "Crime City", it will just attract some more criminals.  Things can still be remedied for as long as law enforcers would really work on scaring off these bad elements.  Mayors should initiate investigation to those police officers who are accepting bribes or protetecting these criminals and should be punished to the fullest degree of the law.  No more of those monkey business!
