Marina orders Sulpicio to explain latest sea mishap

09/05/2008 | 03:30 PM

MANILA, Philippines - The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) on Friday ordered Sulpicio Lines Inc. to submit a formal report explaining the circumstances that led to the latest mishap involving another of the shipping firm’s vessels.

Radio dzBB quoted Marina officer-in-charge Maria Elena Bautista as saying the shipping company should submit a “marine protest" recounting how MV Cotabato Princess ran aground and eventually damaged equipment used in the expansion project in Port San Pedro in Iloilo province.

Bautista’s move came after relatives of the victims of MV “Princess of the Stars," another Sulpicio-owned vessel that capsized in Romblon last June, dared Bautista to finally suspend the shipping firm’s franchise after the Cotabato Princess incident.

Bautista, who concurrently heads Task Force MV Princess of the Stars, also ordered Cotabato Princess ship captain Virgilio Ilagan to likewise explain the incident.

The latest sea mishap to plague Sulpicio happened while Cotabato Princess, which came from Zamboanga City, was about to dock at the said port at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

None of the vessel’s 49 crewmembers were hurt in the incident.

The report also said that Cotabato Princess has already been grounded following the incident. -

This incident has yet to have been settled?

If something like this happened in the United States, this company and this Sulpicio would have already been barraged by thousands of law suits that would have bankrupted this individual. And liquidated his company.

This man needs to just comply. For the sake of the families that have been affected.

Mr. Sulpicio, you cannot take your money with you to the grave.

May the Almighty Father in Heaven, Who Knows Everything, and whose Heart is with those afflicted and suffering; may our Almighty Father have mercy on your eternal soul.
The hundreds that died in your ship; and the thousands more who are suffering because of their deaths.

Sulpicio, give mercy, so you will be given mercy.

For me, Bem, it does not warrant this individual to play 'cat and mouse' when it comes to addressing the victims pleas. Additionally, his company has had multiple incidents of these marine accidents.

Many of these ships aren't even fit to set sail; let alone even be declared 'sea worthy'.

Many of these ships are hand-me-downs from other countries; whose main frames have already been structurally damaged. What do they do? They just repaint.

This is catastrophic. Considering the amount of time it took to address the situation; the salvaging of the ship and even addressing the thousands of relatives of the victims.

An incident like this, would have already liquidated large companies here in the 'states.

Think about TWA (Trans World Airlines), which liquidated due to airplane crashes in Florida back in the 90s. TWA, was a leading airline carrier back in the day, may I add.

I thought all trips of Sulpicio Lines were already suspended after last Junes' incident.

Until when will Marina allow these things to happened?

We, the unwilling, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, for so long, with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing.

Corruption. Sulpicio has his fingers within the Senate, and probably within the Judicial and Executive powers of government.

Something like this disgusts me. Because when it goes down to it; money actually has power to overpower the cries and wails of victims and their relatives.

Reading things like this makes me sick to my stomach.
