MANILA, Philippines - The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) on Friday ordered Sulpicio Lines Inc. to submit a formal report explaining the circumstances that led to the latest mishap involving another of the shipping firm’s vessels.
Radio dzBB quoted Marina officer-in-charge Maria Elena Bautista as saying the shipping company should submit a “marine protest" recounting how MV Cotabato Princess ran aground and eventually damaged equipment used in the expansion project in Port San Pedro in Iloilo province.
Bautista’s move came after relatives of the victims of MV “Princess of the Stars," another Sulpicio-owned vessel that capsized in Romblon last June, dared Bautista to finally suspend the shipping firm’s franchise after the Cotabato Princess incident.
Bautista, who concurrently heads Task Force MV Princess of the Stars, also ordered Cotabato Princess ship captain Virgilio Ilagan to likewise explain the incident.
The latest sea mishap to plague Sulpicio happened while Cotabato Princess, which came from Zamboanga City, was about to dock at the said port at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
None of the vessel’s 49 crewmembers were hurt in the incident.
The report also said that Cotabato Princess has already been grounded following the incident. -
