Oil Spill in Talibon Bohol
« on: February 13, 2012, 08:11:30 AM »
TALIBON, Bohol – The oil spill that was allegedly dumped by a passing M/V Elizabeth on January 6, 2012 along Danajon bank channel near the island barangay of Bilangbilangan Dako, Bien-Unido town, has already spread to nearby island of Jao, off this town.

This was the initial findings revealed by Jose “Lolong” Garcia, coastal marine management staff of Bohol Environment Management Office (BEMO), who conducted verification of the incident in said island following Gov. Edgar Chatto's directive to conduct an inquiry on the extent of the damage wrought by the oil pollution incident.

“I found out that there are still some traces of oil stained particularly on the bamboo split fence, pole and mangrove bark and leaves that stretch about a kilometre along the shoreline” in Busalian, he said.

Some fishermen also reported having seen already the presence of said used oil in the seawater a hundred meters away from the shoreline. But nobody from the island residents actually saw the vessel caused the dumping of the sludge, Garcia said. Garcia quoted a certain Seldan A. Maranga, of Busalian island as saying as that a large volume of used oil has already engulfed some areas between the islands of Saag and Jao, nearby, off this town.
