FISH Project in Talibon
« on: November 15, 2007, 12:10:05 PM »
Through a strategic planning, the Fisheries Improved for Sustainable Harvest (FISH Project trained 20 members of the Technical Working Group (TWG) on techniques to establish sustainability of the municipality-run Interpretive Center.

FISH Project, a non-government organization that is expert on coastal resource management, sponsored the seminar held at the function hall of the center on October 25-26, wherein Aning Gulayan and Maylele Avenido served as seminar facilitators. Mayor Juanario Item, for his part, graced the activity to show support.

It was FISH Project who facilitated the establishment of the town's Interpretive Center project, with the collaboration of the Bureau of Fishery and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and other local, provincial and national agencies.

All over the Philippines, it is the only interpretive center that is managed by a municipality, which has become known to local and foreign tourists.

It serves as the good source of useful information on proper protection, conservation and rehabilitation of marine resources and the ecosystem.

During the strategic planning, the participants formulated the center's vision, mission and goals that will serve as over-all guiding framework for the sustainable operation of the Interpretive Center in the next five years to promote and strengthen its marketing.

They also identified success indicators, the appropriate implementing structure, specific action programs and corresponding activities that can be undertaken in a period of one to five years.

The facilitators also assisted the participants in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the current operations of the center, and in identifying existing opportunities and threats, as well, that may affect its sustainability.

The participants tackled the leveling off of expectations settings wherein resource speakers, Vicky Smith and Asuncion Sia presented the updates of the center's operation.

There was also a discussion on implementing structure, financial management, marketing, promotions and outreach activities, and on strategies on how to identify appropriate implementing structure and internal, external relationships, marketing, promotions and outreach activities. (Onad Munalem)
