Dengue surge to an alarming rate of around 200 cases a month since June this year, the province's second highest annual record in the last five years, health officials here said.

Provincial health officer, Dr. Reymoses Cabagnot, said on Saturday that dengue cases already reached 900 cases with 12 deaths as of September 12, this year. The 12th death was recorded on September 7, she said.

Dr.Cabagnot said the number is second highest annual record in the past five years and 4th in the last 10 years.

The highest surge was recorded in 2010 which reached 2,647 and this year’s record is racing to rank second.

Last year, the number of cases only reached 147; 623 cases recorded in 2009 with eight deaths; and 145 cases in 2008 with five deaths.

The second highest surge in 10 years was recorded in 2007 wherein the cases reached 1,679 with 16 deaths; the cases reached 231 in 2006 with three deaths; 1,113 in 2005 with 21 deaths; 283 in 2004 with five deaths; 365 in 2003 with three deaths; 289 in 2002 with two deaths; 712 in 2001 with five deaths; and 70 cases in 2000.

With 12 deaths out of the 900, the fatality rate is now pegged at around 1.35 percent compared to the 1.66 percent in the middle of August when the number of cases reached 663 with 11 deaths.

In late June, the fatality rate reached 3.66 percent with 273 cases and 10 deaths.

The DOH standard on dengue fatality rate is one percent of the total number of cases.

The 12th patient to die from dengue was Francilli Mae Bonga, a five-year-old girl from Barangay Mariveles, Dauis town who was rushed to Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital on September 6 at 8:15 p.m. She died the next day at 9:45 a.m.

According to Cabagnot, late referral to hospital is the most common reason that a dengue case result to death.

Cabagnot raised alarm when the first death from dengue was recorded in the first few months of the year until it reached 11 by June, and finally a dozen as of the first half of September this year.

The provincial health officer renewed her calls to households to maintain the 4 o’clock habit as the basic approach to prevent dengue.
