Close to 7,000 runners, including top Kenyan contenders Benjamin Kipkazi and Willy Kepkemei Rotich who are veterans of international marathons, will hit the road today in the Tagbilaran leg of the 35th National Milo Marathon, which had just started early this morning at the Island City Mall ground.

Race organizers said this is 13th of the 18 total provincial stages of the country's biggest, grandest, longest and most prestigious running event, and the first time in Bohol that Kenyan runners will see action in the race which is contested in three categories, 3K Kiddie Run, 5K Fun Run, 10K, and 21K.

The 21K champion will each receive P10,000 and a trophy while the runners up will get P6,000 and a trophy each and the third placers will take home P4,000 and a trophy apiece. The fourth-placers will pocket P2,000 and a medal each while the fifth to 10th finishers will each receive P500 and a medal.

Male 21K runners who finish within one hour and 15 minutes will also qualify to the national finals slated Dec. 11 in Manila along with female 21K entries who reach the finish within 1:35:00. The 42.195K national finals stakes a whopping P300,000 each for the men's and women's titlists.

The top four 10K finishers will claim P5,000, P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000 while the next six runners will go home with P500 each. The first four 5K runners will win P2,500, P1,500, P1,000 and P500 while P250 each will be given away to the fifth to 10th placers. In 3K, the first to fourth placers will bag P1,500, P1,000, P500 and P250 while the fifth to 10th runners will each get P150.

Dubbed "More Shoes. More Dreams. More Champions," this year's edition will give away 10,000 more Milo running shoes. A portion of the registration fee paid by a runner will go to Milo's advocacy campaign of producing running shoes for selected public schools.
